About Murlen National Park

Situated about 245 kms. east of Aizawl, this Park lies close to the Indo-Myanmar border. It accommodates Tigers, Chamber Deer, Himalayan Bear, Barking Deer, Serow and many varieties of birds and orchids. It is significant because of its proximity to the Chin Hills. It covers an area of approximately 200 sq. km. Large tracts of relatively undisturbed Sub-Tropical evergreen forests are found in this park.

The Villages

There are five villages around the park. The Murlen village with about 70 or 80 families is situated inside the park in the core area. Shifting of Murlen village outside the park is under active process by the State Government.

Wild Animals and Birds

The Park is rich in both mammalian and avifauna with primates and squirrels predominating. The threatened Stump-Tailed Macaque is the most important. There also two important threatened galliform species - the Hume's Bartailed Pheasant and the Rufousthroated Partridge (Arberophila refogulari), and all the 11 species of Bulbuls reported from the North East Hills. Among the Woodpeckers, Speckled Piculet (Picumnus innominaturs), Stripedheaded Woodpecker (Dendrocopos stratus), Greater Yellownape (Picus flavinucha), Lesser Yellownage (P. chlorolephus), Bay Woodpeckers (Bthythigicus pyrrhotis) are common. The three species of Hornbills Priental pied Hornbill, Greater Hornbill and Wreathed Horbill are also found here.

Vantawng

137 kms from Aizawl are the largest and most magnificent falls in Mizoram, the Vantawng Falls surrounded by a lush forest teeming with bamboo groves. This is a place of awe- inspiring beauty. The waterfall is 750 feet high. People love to experience the scenic beauty around the area.
