We have been reading about the various dams in India since grade 5. The teachers taught about the dams as well as made us mark their location on the map of India. In India, there are over 4000 dams including the famous and not-so-famous dams. Some are quite high whereas some are really long. The majority of the dams present in India are the multi-purpose dams that serve the goals of irrigation and generating hydroelectricity. On the other hand, they have emanated as a popular tourist destination in India. Standing on the River Bhagirathi, Tehri Dam is the highest dam located in the Indian state of Uttaranchal. This enormous dam stands at a height of 260 meters and is a multi-purpose dam that has the capacity to generate 1000 megawatts of the electricity. Tehri Dam was constructed after carefully carving the lower foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas. The reservoir capacity of this dam is 2,100,000 acre-feet.
A concrete gravity dam that stands across the River Satluj, Bhakra Nangal Dam is the largest dam in India. It is located in the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh. The area around this vivacious dam is endowed with greenery. The reservoir of Bhakra Nangal Dam, known as Gobind Sagar Lake, is the 2nd largest reservoir in India and stores up to 9.34 billion cubic meters of the water. This awe-inspiring attraction of Himachal Pradesh has the capacity to generate 1,350 megawatts of hydroelectricity.
Hirakud Dam is a well-known attraction and the longest earthen dam located in the Indian state of Odisha. Perching on the River Mahanadi, this dam was inaugurated by the former PM of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, in the year 1957. Hirakud Dam has a height of 200 feet and the longest running reservoir that spans a gross area of 55 km. The first multi-purpose river valley project was started on this dam.
Standing at a height of 490 feet on the River Krishna, Nagarjunasagar Dam is the largest masonry dam in the world. With an enormous reservoir that has a capacity to hold 11,472,000,000 cubic meters, this dam runs across 16 km. and has 26 gates to release the water. It has the potential of producing 815 megawatts of hydroelectricity. Over the years, it has gained immense fame as a popular tourist attraction in Andhra Pradesh.
Also known by the name of Bhavani Dam, Bhavanisagar Dam stands on the Bhavani River. It has a height of 130 feet and runs across 8 km. The first irrigation project after the independence was initiated at Bhavanisagar Dam. A reckoned attraction in Tamil Nadu, Bhavanisagar Dam has the reservoir with the capacity of holding 33 million cubic meters of the water. The state government regularly renovates the gates of this dam.
Standing with a vivacious height of 534 feet, Sardar Sarovar Dam stands on the sacred River Narmada. This amazing dam was constructed to contribute to the large irrigation projects that were started by the government of India. With its construction, Sardar Sarovar Dam has benefitted the Indian states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. This gravity dam has the capacity to generate 1,450 megawatts of hydroelectricity. The government of Gujarat promotes Sardar Sarovar Dam as a major tourist site in Gujarat.
Indirasagar Dam is a well-known dam located in the heart of country Madhya Pradesh. This dam has a height of 300 feet and stands on the waters of the River Narmada. The reservoir of this dam stands amid the largest water dam reservoirs in India. It can hold back 12 million cubic meters of water. The numerous irrigation projects have been initiated at Indirasagar Dam & it has the potential to generate 1000 megawatts of hydroelectricity.
Banasura Sagar Dam is a dam located in Gods Own Country Kerala. Built on the River Kabini, This enormous dam has a height of 270 feet and spans a total area of 21 km. This dam is entirely constructed out of huge boulders and stones. Banasura Sagar Dam is beckoned by the enchanting Banasura Hill. The government of Kerala has been promoting this dam as a tourist site in Kerala.
Unlike other dams that are constructed over the surface of the earth, Nathpa Jhakri Dam is constructed below the surface of the earth. It is an underground hydro power station that is built across the River Satluj. It took 10 years to construct this dam. Nathpa Jhakri Dam has a huge reservoir that has a capacity of holding 3 million cubic meters of water. It serves as the main source for irrigation in the majority of the fields present in Himachal Pradesh.
