The Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is located around 35kms from Agartala, the capital city of Tripura. The sanctuary is quite near to the National Highway 44, which connects it to other important places. The sanctuary was incepted in the year 1987 as a measure to protect the wildlife of the place.The sanctuary covers an area of around 18.53sq.kms and abounds in varied type of vegetation cover. The sanctuary is an ideal place for all those who want to enjoy the beauties of the Mother Nature at its best. The sanctuary offers various sightseeing sights like Botanical garden, lake, zoo etc.
Flora - The sanctuary is very rich in natural vegetation cover that includes Agar, Nageshwar . There are around 456 species of plants that includes both dicotyledons as well as monocotyledons. The chief trees found here are Sal, Garjan, Chamal, Kanak, Kurcha, Pichla, Awla, Bahera, Amlaki, Hargaja, bamboo etc.
Fauna- One can see here the rare species of crab eating Mongoose, which was last seen around 72years ago. The sanctuary is a home to 5 species of primates that include spectacled langur, Rhesus macaque, Capped langur, Pigtailed macaque. One can also see here other animals like leopard, jungle fowl, barking deer, clouded leopard, wild pig, civets etc.
Avifauna - There are around 150 different species of avifauna that includes both residential birds as well as migratory birds. Some of the common birds seen here are whistling teal, open billed stork, white ibis and many more.
Places to visit at Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary Sepahijala zoological park
The Park was incepted in the year 1972 so as to protect the place from encroachment. The zoological park is divided in to 5 sections i.e. Primate Section, Carnivores section, Ungulate section, Aviary section and Reptile section.
Botanical Garden - In this garden you can know about various species of plants and trees. The garden comprises of around 60 different species of medicinal plants.
Lake - There are various lakes that are found in the sanctuary. Lakes like Amrit Sagar and Abasarika offers the tourists with the boating facilities.
Toy train - One can travel on the small train that takes deep within the sanctuary.
