Vikramshila University doesn’t need introduction. It was a historic university in Bhagalpur city of Bihar. It was a significant educational institution along with Nalanda University. This university was built during the reign of the Pala Empire in the 9th century. Vikramshila University was the largest university of the olden times in Bihar. It had more than 100 teachers and over 1000 students. At present, this historic attraction stands devastated as it was destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji in the 13th century.
Why Is It Famous?
Vikramshila University is famous because different seats of Buddhism were linked to Vikramshila University. It was a Buddhist University and promoted all the sects of Buddhism, especially the Tantric Sect. Apart from the Tibetan Buddhism, the subjects like mathematics, grammar, Indian Logic, philosophy etc. were taught here. Many scholars from different countries were invited to teach the students.
This university was digged out and till date, the excavation is going on. The excavations revealed the main hall, pillars carved with Buddhists texts etc. A stupa was also discovered that contained the remains of Buddha and another unknown monk.

Tourists and historians visit Vikramshila University on a huge scale. Excluding the summers and monsoons, other seasons are appropriate for witnessing the ruins of this ancient university.

The ASI manages the Ancient Vikramshila University. Being a Monument of National Interest, no one can dump garbage in any form. Thus, make sure you do not leave behind any leftovers.
