He received this land as a token from the British Raj that appreciated him for his help in Anglo Nepalese War. He lived in the Chail Palace, which was his summer home. After he was restricted from entering the actual summer capital Shimla, he decided to build his own summer palace and on a hilltop, he built this beautiful cricket stadium. This was a site where the Maharaja would regularly play cricket with the British. It was later acquired by the Indian Army and today acts as a popular tourist attraction in Chail.

If you are coming by air, you need to get down at the Shimla airport and from there you can hail a cab or a taxi and reach Chail. One can also take the Kalka-Shimla railway line and get down at Shimla to reach Chail from there.
