Big Mosque is a Wallajah Mosque built in 1795 this mosque is one of the most attractive ones in chennai. The mosque located in triplicane high road and is built of grey granite rather than wood of steel. Referred to as the Big mosque (for obvious reasons) it was built by the Wallajah family in 1795 in memory of the Nawab. The Prince of Arcot is closely associated with this shrine even today. Built without steel or wood, this magnificent edifice at Triplicane is the most important Muslim shrine in Chennai.
The Nawab of Arcot was friendly towards fellow hindus, appointing a hindu as his chief personal secretary. A chronogram written in Persian by Raja Makhhan Lal Bahdur Khirat the Hindu Munshi of the Nawab, is found on the entrance to the prayer hall. The mosque is the largest and one of the oldest in Chennai and is active as a place of worship.
