Belonging to the Latin Rite, The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic cathedral. it is one of the oldest church of the capital city.
History
A member of Franciscan first order, which was founded by St. Francis of Assisi, Father Luke took the step to build the church. Father was preached the people to live life of simplicity and love. It once strike him that he should do something that could help the weaker sections to lead a better life despite of their poverty. Hence, he executed the idea by constructing the church.
The foundation stone was laid by Dr. E.Vanni in 1929; however, the construction began in 1930. A lot of charity aided in the construction of this holy work for example principle Altar of the Church made up of marble was donated by Sir Anthony de Mello.
The Church also received gifts in the forms of bell, vestments and altar furniture, which they were honored by Archbishop of Agra. This project finally got executed with finance done by the colonial officers of the British Empire.
Architecture
Being a piece of Italian Architecture, this church of The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart was built under the strong supervision of architect Henry Medd. There are a few white colored pillars, supporting the canopy and together, form the exterior of the Church.
Also on both the sides of the Church’s entrance foyer, circular shaped turrets have been installed above the roof. Within the Church one finds sumptuously rich and grand polished stone floors, wide arches and a towering curved roof.
