Hassan is a city situated in Karnataka and is the district headquarters of Hassan district. Also referred as a town, Hassan city is located exactly 934 m above sea level. The weather in the city is very much similar to Bangalore. Founded by a chieftain, Channa Krishnappa Naik in 11th century, the city has been named after the Goddess "Hassanamba". Many also colloquially call it Karnataka’s temple-architectural capital. The average literacy rate in the country is 79% and 10% of the population in the city is under 6 years of age.
The former Prime Minister of the country, Mr. H.D. Deve Gowda belonged to Hassan district. There are two main parties in the city namely, Janata Dal Secular (JDS) and Congress (INC). The city has its own bus terminus, which operates buses to various major cities in west and south India. The nearest airports are located in Mysore, Bangalore and Mangalore.
The city experiences tropical savanna climate all year round. The monthly mean temperature is above 18°C (64°F) and the city usually experiences dry temperature. The driest month of the year has precipitation as low as 60mm (2.36 in). The Hassan district is located 194kms from Bangalore. Owing to its spatial features and climate, the Hassan city is also at times referred as "poor man’s Ooty". The city is expounded by greenery and water troves.
One finds no difficulty while moving around the city. Though one can explore the city by walking, there are also many other options available like boarding the public transport.
Car/Taxi: One can take advantage of the taxi/cab service easily available in the city. Cars and taxis are the best option to explore the city comfortably.
Bus: The city has its own bus terminus that is being operated by the Karnataka State Bus Transport Service. One can also board the private buses.
Auto Rickshaw: One can board an auto rickshaw to reach any part of the city and pay the fare according to the meter.
While in Hassan, one can shop for pure silk, ivory, handicrafts, sandalwood, jewellery etc. In the markets one can buy variety of goods contrived from sandalwood. Some of the popular market areas in the city are MG Road or Mahatma Gandhi Road, K R Puram and Gandhi bazaar. There are also many shopping malls in the city. There is also no dearth of the entertainment options available in the city such as theatres, bars, pubs, clubs etc.
