The city of Jammu is the winter capital of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The city derives its name from its founder Raja Jambulochan. It was first named Jambupora, then Jambu Nagar and finally Jammu. It is also known as ‘City of Temples’ since it has many historic temples and domes of old mosques.
Jammu is situated at 32.73°N 74.87°E, around the banks of River Tawi. The city has an approximate elevation of 327 m. The Shivalik Range surrounds it on the north, east and southeast while Trikuta Range covers the north-western borders.
Jammu has a humid subtropical climate, with scorching summers and freezing winters. The monsoon showers are also equally heavy in the region. Spring and Autumn seasons are the best period to visit this place.
Jammu has its own Railway Station named Jammu Tawi that connects it to major cities. This station is used as a getaway to Katra for Hindu pilgrims travelling to Vaishno Devi. NH 1A and 1B provide road connectivity to the city. There are several inter-state bus services that frequently pick and drop visitors. Travelling by air is also easy since Jammu has its own airport with frequent flights to all major cities.

Vir Marg, Raghunath Bazaar and Hari Market are the most flocked places to shop around the city. Visitors can buy items of Kashmiri handicraft and traditional Dogra jewellery. The dry fruits of Jammu are also famous for their quality.
