Interesting facts about Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary:
It is spread over 2.74 hectares area and i.e. too at the heart of Kochi.
It has a wide variety of mangroves which comprise of nearly 18 acres count. This large count of mangroves species provide many thousands of migratory birds.
In its middle, there is a little deep tidal lake surrounded by dense mangroves which connect Kochi backwaters through a canal.
Its explicit range of flora and fauna has brought it the name of ‘Green lung of Kochi’. The name suggests its pollution-free condition different from the other locations of Kochi.
If you get some luck, you can spot some rare mammals including flying fox, Eurasian otter and three-striped squirrel.

Due to hosting distinctive mangrove vegetation and many breeding birds, in 2004, this bird sanctuary was declared to be a protected zone. According to 2006 survey, Mangalavanam had a record of 32 different species’ birds which was 194 in total.
