History
There a very interesting story behind how the Radha Kund was made. As per the mythological stories, it is believed that it was Lord Krishna was asked by Radhaji to take a bath after killing a demon. He laughingly put his heel in the ground and created a pond. Lord Krishna would then tease Radharani by going into the Shyam Kund, he had just created. He would also keep boasting about its glory. That’s when Radharani decided that she didn’t want to be outdone by Lord Krishna. So, she took her bangles and started digging up the sand. She, along with some of the other gopis, dug deep to create another pond or kund. Next, they started getting water in their earthen pots and putting it inside the kund. Even more of the tirthas appeared and wanted to help Radharani and the other gopis by filling the kund with sacred water. Soon enough, all the tiraths broke into the Radha Kund. Now, both the Shyam Kund and the Radha Kund are side by side. On the eighth day of Kartik month in Hindu calendar, Lord Krishna took a dip in this holy water and since then, he made it the most famous kund of its kind.
Festival
Every year on the eighth day of the dark month of Kartik month, there is a beautiful festival organized by the people. The midnight of this day in Kartik month is celebrated by everyone. There are many pilgrims who visit the Radha Kund to take a dip here and seek blessings. There is also an annual fair organized in this kund area during the months of October and November.
Best Time to Visit
Winter is the best time when you should visit the Radha Kund in Govardhan. Summers are pretty hot in Govardhan so you would not have the best time taking a dip in the Radha Kund. Moreover, you need to walk a little bit and summers might feel too hot. Months from October to March are pretty cool and pleasant and you can visit there to enjoy the weather.
How to Reach
Reaching the Radha Kund in Govardhan is not a very difficult task, rather it is very easy. It is located near the city of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. For those who are visiting by air, the nearest airport is in Agra. It is a domestic airport and does not have many flights from all other parts. However, if you are coming from any other part, the place that you should turn to is the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. It would only be a 2-3 hour’s drive to reach Mathura from there.
If you are coming via train, the nearest railway station would be in Mathura. It is just 22 kilometers away from Govardhan and you can simply take a cab or taxi and reach Govardhan from there.
For those who are coming via road, Govardhan is well-connected to all other major cities. It could be the Yamuna Expressway from where you can reach Mathura. You can also take the Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation buses or Haryana Transport buses to reach here.
