The Karanji Lake situated at the footsteps of Chamundi Hills is spread over an area of 90 acres. One of the largest lakes in Karnataka, the lake affords a charming view of the Lalitha Mahal Palace. Many species of migratory birds have made the lush vegetation at the zoo their breeding site, which is largely attributable to the rich herbage and tiny marshy islands provided by the lake.
Karanji Lake, a protected area under the Mysore Zoo authorities, has the Chamundi hills as the backdrop that accentuates the charm and tranquility of the atmosphere. A butterfly park housing a plethora of plant species to attract butterflies has been set up in Karanji Lake by the Zoo authorities on an experimental basis.
