Built as one of the largest residential structures during the 19th century, the Moti Bagh Palace served as the permanent residing place of the Maharajas of Patiala till the 1940s. Maharaja Narinder Singh started the construction of this splendid palatial residence in 1840 which got completed in early 20th century during the rule of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. It is one of the most popular sightseeing places in Patiala that attract visitors with its splendor. The marvelous Shalimar Gardens in Lahore served as the inspiration for the architecture of this palace. The palace is a four-story building which has a façade designed in Rajasthani style with lots of ‘chhatris’ and ‘jharokhas’. After 1940, the royal family of Patiala shifted their residence to the new Moti Bagh Palace and since then, this palace has been serving as a sports institute named, Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports.

Visiting Patiala is always advised during the winter months ranging from November to February. One can enjoy the beauty of this palace and take strolls through the gardens with the cool breeze blowing through the hair during the cool months.
