He was the son of Sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudmati. Sage Markandeya was born after a great penance performed by Mrikandu in front of Lord Shiva but was destined to live till the age of 16 years. He defeated death with the blessings of Lord Shiva and wrote Markandeya Purana. At present, his shrine in Rajahmundry is a famous destination and is visited by many tourists.
