Sonabhandara Caves are historic caves in Bihar. They are rock-cut caves found in Rajgir region of the state. These caves were created between 3rd and 4th century for the Jain ascetics. The caves have a serene ambiance and beautiful surroundings. They are carved in the Mauryan style and carry the beautiful inscriptions from Buddhism.

The site of Sonabhandara Caves is famous due to different reasons. Many legends are associated with Sonabhandara Caves. According to a legend, these caves are claimed to be a huge temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The broken idol of Lord Vishnu narrates these caves being a Hindu pilgrimage site in the then times.
The second legend states of Sonbhandara Caves being a treasure chest. The name ‘Sonabhandara’ literally translates to the ‘collection of gold’ in Hindi. It is acclaimed that gold is hidden in this cave but the passage leading to it is a mystery. Many unsuccessful attempts were made by the British to discover the gold. Firing the cannons destructed a huge part of this cave.
