Dedicated to the Kagyu Sect of Buddhism, Ralang monastery is one of the major monasteries in India. It is located in southern part of Sikkim and approximately lies 6 km away from Ravangla. It is blessed with the tranquilizing surroundings and has an interesting legend behind it. According to it, the 12th Karmapa threw some rice grains from Tsurphu Monastery and where the grains fell, it became the place for Ralang Monastery.
It Is Known For:-
1) This monastery is a famous pilgrimage site for the Buddhists and they visit this place to pay respects to Lord Buddha and other Buddhist saints
2) It stands in the Indo-Tibetan style of architecture and has rich interiors. The paintings of Buddhist saints hang on the walls and the main altar has an idol of Buddha
3) There are different festivals that are celebrated at Ralang Monastery. The masked dance, Mahakala Nritya festival are major festivals that are celebrated enthusiastically
4) Worship of Khangchendzonga is also practiced annually in September
Best Time To Visit:-
Excluding the scorching summers and heavy downpour, any season can be chosen for visiting Ralang Monastery. Spending a couple of hours inside the monastery provides a sense of mental calmness.
