Associated with the times of Lord Krishna, Maniharan Tunnel is a popular tourist attraction in Silchar, Assam. The place is also revered as a holy place and visited by the pilgrims on a huge scale. According to the folklore, it is said that Lord Krishna used this tunnel for visiting the region of Silchar. The engravings of the Hindu religious figures can be spotted inside the tunnel.
Why Is It Famous?
1) According to folklore, Shri Krishna battled Jambhvant, the bear, to take a precious gemstone back from him. Jambhvant was defeated in the bout and returned the gem to the Lord.
2) He also offered his daughter’s hand to Krishna. Lord Krishna married the daughter of Jambhvant.
3) On the interior walls of the tunnel, the engravings depicting Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Lord Hanuman, and Shri Garuda can be seen.
4) Since the tunnel is quite long & dark, the visitors are allowed to visit only to a certain limit.
