Dagshai Jail Museum, Solan is a former British prison that happens to be a frequently visited place. So, basically, the museum is one of the oldest cantonment towns in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. This place was earlier used as the storage yard and only after the armuy people cleaned the place, it came out to be a well-designed structure. Later on, this place was converted into a museum and it is also to be noted here that this is the only jail museum in India apart from the Cellular Jail in the Andamans.
History:
As far as the history of the place is talked about, the leader James Daly of the mutiny was shot by a firing squad in the prison courtyard dated November 2, 1920. After being given complete military honors and funeral, his remains were then buried at the Dagshai Cemetery until 1970. Many years down the lane, with the help of areas Brigade Commander and Himachal Tourism Department, this place was erected into a museum.
Architecture:
Now, coming on to the architecture of the Dagshai Jail Museum, the jail blocks of the museum is as chilly as it was during the time of Britishers. It was long back in the year 1849 that the construction of the jail began and consisted of 54 maximum cellular cells. Three feet apart, all these cells have two doors each. It is also to be noted here that The Dagshai Jail Museum doesn’t have any source of ventilation and light in the cells. The Dagshai Jail has only one VIP cell that is boasted of luxuries namely, fireplace and washroom.
