Standing in the marvelous Dravidian architecture, Shri Krishna Matha in Udupi is a famous Hindu Temple. The foundation of this ancient pilgrimage site was laid in the thirteenth-century by the renowned Vaishnav saint, Jagadguru Madhawacharya. This temple enshrines Lord Krishna that is carved from the Shaligram Shila, a holy representation of Lord Krishna. This intriguing temple never fails to draw pilgrims on an extensive scale, especially the Vaishnav sect.
It Is Known For:-
1) Udupi Shri Krishna Matha is a religious Hindu site for the followers of Hinduism. It has a special significance among the devotees.
2) According to the legend, the idol of the Lord located in the sanctum was discovered by Swami Madhawacharya in the pit of sandalwood. He collected the sandalwood after saving a ship from sinking.
3) After he washed the sandalwood, the idol of Lord Krishna emerged from the pit and was installed by the sage himself in the sanctum of the temple.
4) Presently, this temple is visited by umpteen devotees of Lord Krishna from nearby cities and other states as well.
5) The temple opens at 5:30 am in the morning and shut its doors at 8:30 pm sharp.
6) The festivals like Tulsi Puja, Dhanu Puja, Hayagriva Jayanti, Narasimha Jayanti, Deepotsava, Rangotsava, Navaratri etc. are celebrated here with a great pomp.
