Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Janardhanaswamy Temple is an ancient Hindu shrine in Varkala. This temple is said to be more than 2000 years old! According to folklore, Lord Vishnu appeared in Varkala in the form of a very fragile old man in front of Lord Brahma, the creator. He came to remind Lord Brahma about his job of creation instead of performing the yagya. In order to apologize, Lord Brahma constructed a temple and dedicated to him.

1) This temple is known for providing moksha to the departed souls. It is said that if a small puja is conducted for the departed soul, it attains moksha
2) The celebration of the festival of Arattu. It is a 10-day long festival that includes prayers and dance processions in the praise of Lord Janardhanaswamy

Although the shrine can be visited throughout the year, the best time is considered during the months of March-April. It is the time when Arattu festival is celebrated with a great enthusiasm.
