The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1973. The sanctuary is situated adjacent to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the northeast and Mudumalai of Tamilnadu on the southeast. The Wayanad sanctuary is rich in bio-diversity and forms an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It has been notified as a reserve because of its rich fauna and flora.
The management of the sanctuary lays emphasis on scientific conservation with due consideration to the general lifestyle of the Tribals and others who live on the fringes of the forest.
