The 132 m (433ft) long tower located in centre of Merdeka Square, National Monument is one of the significant landmarks of Central Jakarta. It is a symbol of Indonesian freedom fight! The construction work for the monument started in 1961 and the monument was opened for the public in the year 1975. One of the highlights of the monument is flame covered with gold foil.
Monument Design & Architecture
The design of the monument is based on the philosophy of Lingga and Yoni. Lingga & Yoni are the symbols of fertility, harmony, eternal life and balance. Lingga represents masculinity and Yoni is symbol of femininity.
The monument comprises of "117.7m obelisk on a 45m square platform at a height of 17m". The obelisk is covered with Italian marble.
There is a pond in the north measuring 25×25 m.
There is also a splendid statue of Prince Diponegoro in the north.
A lift is installed in the southern side for carrying the visitors at 115 meters height.
The Hall of Independence is located inside the "cup" part of the monument.
Visiting Time
One can make visit to the park any time between 08.00 - 15.00 {Western Indonesia Time (UTC+7)} on all days of the week. The monument is closed on last Monday of every month.
One can also spend time watching the exhibits of dioramas at Indonesian National History Museum during ones visit to the monument. National Monument has a ticket office located at the end of the tunnel. The entrance of the monument is 100 meters away from the monument.
