Lake Nakuru Lake Elementaita

About The Lake Nakuru Lake Elementaita

Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita, situated in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, are two stunning freshwater lakes known for their scenic beauty, abundant wildlife, and diverse birdlife. Lake Nakuru, located within Nakuru County, is renowned for its vast flocks of flamingos that blanket the shoreline, creating a mesmerizing pink hue against the backdrop of the surrounding savannah and acacia woodlands. Lake Elementaita, located a short distance north of Lake Nakuru, offers a more tranquil setting, with its serene waters and picturesque landscapes providing a haven for birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, and photographers alike. Together, these two lakes form part of the Lake Nakuru National Park and the Soysambu Conservancy, both of which are important conservation areas that protect and preserve Kenya's rich biodiversity and natural heritage.

History of Lake Nakuru Lake Elementaita

Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita have long been revered by the indigenous communities of the Rift Valley, who consider them sacred sites imbued with spiritual significance. Over the centuries, these lakes have provided sustenance and shelter to countless generations of people and wildlife, serving as vital sources of water, food, and livelihoods. In the early 20th century, British colonialists recognized the ecological importance of the lakes and designated them as protected areas, laying the foundation for their eventual establishment as national parks and conservation reserves. Today, Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita continue to attract visitors from around the world, drawn by their natural beauty, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.

Time to Visit

The best time to visit Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita is during the dry season, from June to September, when the weather is mild and the wildlife is most active. This is also the peak season for birdwatching, as thousands of flamingos flock to Lake Nakuru to feed on the algae-rich waters. However, the lakes are worth visiting year-round, each season offering its own unique attractions and experiences. Visitors should be aware that the rainy season, from March to May and from October to December, may result in muddy roads and limited wildlife sightings, but also brings lush vegetation and fewer crowds.

Entry Fee

Entry fees for Lake Nakuru National Park and Soysambu Conservancy vary depending on nationality, age, and type of vehicle. Visitors are advised to check the official websites or contact park authorities for up-to-date information on entry fees and any additional charges for activities such as guided tours, camping, or boat rides. It's also recommended to carry cash in local currency to pay for park fees, as credit card facilities may not be available at the entry gates.

Time Required for Travel

Traveling to Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita from Nairobi typically takes around 2 to 3 hours by road, depending on traffic conditions and the route taken. Visitors can choose to drive themselves or book guided tours that include transportation and park entry fees. Once at the lakes, plan to spend at least a full day exploring the area and enjoying activities such as game drives, birdwatching, nature walks, and picnics. Those with more time may opt to stay overnight at one of the lodges or campsites near the lakeshores, allowing for a more immersive experience amidst the natural beauty and tranquility of the Rift Valley.

Traveling Tips

Before embarking on a trip to Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita, it's advisable to check the weather forecast and pack accordingly, including sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and lightweight clothing. Bring along plenty of drinking water and snacks for the journey, as well as binoculars and cameras to capture the breathtaking landscapes and wildlife sightings. Respect the rules and regulations of the national parks and conservancies, including speed limits, wildlife viewing etiquette, and waste disposal guidelines. Lastly, be prepared for bumpy roads and occasional wildlife crossings while driving within the parks, and exercise caution to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for yourself and other visitors.

Galavant Africa Safaris was absolutely brilliant in organising our safari to Kenya. We were a family of 4 travelling to Kenya for the first time: from the moment we were received to the time we departed the planning in which things were done was nothing short of fantastic. They understood our budget and the fact that we had two small children with us was carried out in the most efficient manner. Highly highly recommended. If you want that Kenyan dream holiday to come true make sure you use Galavant Africa Safaris. ...more

Bottom line up front: the best trip EVER. That is a bold statement because I have been to over 50 countries (including 8 African countries). The accommodations, the people, the country, our guide and the animals defied all expectations. To start with Kosen (the owner of the tour company) arranged the trip to be exactly what we asked for. No detail was spared. It was our 30th anniversary and there was a special touch at every stop. More importantly, they sponsor schools in the bush to make sure the kids get a chance for education. They have recued young girls and built dormitories so they can get an education and autonomy. Furthermore, they sponsor soccer teams in the slums of Nairobi for impoverished urban kids and create academic support and tutoring programs to help lift them out of poverty. If you book with Kosen, you make a difference and have s to directly give back to the warm and wonderful Kenyan people. ...more

An enjoyable day trip from Nairobi We took a day trip of Nairobi National Park, Giraffe centre and Karen Blixen museum from Safarilinks. The communication with Douglas was prompt, transparent and professional. Our driver and guide Titus was friendly and knowledgeable. Even though it was raining in the morning and we couldn't see lions because of that, we still saw Rhinos, Hippos, Giraffes, Zebras, Impalas, Buffaloes, Crocodiles, Antelopes and lots of birds in their natural habitat. We had a nice day trio and would recommend this company to fellow travelers. ...more

Thanks to Anne and all the team at Amazing Memories Safaris for making our (my son and I) first trip and safari to Kenya a great experience. All the pre-trip itinerary options and selections were done very well; in fact I had initially booked to travel in March, but managed to break my leg in February, so had to change our travel dates to July. Anne reorganised the trip with no problem, finding us accommodation in what was of course an already mostly fully booked peak safari season. Our trip did not get off to the best start as we missed our connection from Europe to Nairobi due to a late incoming flight. Anne reorganised the team to pick us up at the airport very (very) early the morning after our scheduled arrival no problem. The safari part (6 nights: 1 in Treetops, 1 in Lake Nakuru, 4 in Masai Mara) all ran like clockwork, our driver John was excellent as both our guide and driver. All we had to worry about was getting to the hotel receptions each morning and afternoon, where John was always waiting, ready to go. In terms of game sightings, we saw all the Big Five and many other species, including cheetah. In the Masai Mara, we saw 28 lions, including 18 on one day, in 3 different sightings, all very close up. Of course, sometimes it is the luck of the day, but we were very happy with what we saw. While we joined the sightings where many vehicles had already gathered which is normal (for lions, leopard and cheetah - the drivers / guides keep in touch by radio to see where the action is), John also had the patience to look in many areas on our own, away from the main tracks, and this produced a leopard only a few feet from us, which we were able to enjoy by ourselves. Once again, many thanks to Anne and the team. ...more
