About The Nairobi Arboretum

The Nairobi Arboretum, situated in the heart of Nairobi, Kenya, is a tranquil haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Spanning approximately 30 hectares, this botanical garden is home to a diverse collection of indigenous and exotic tree species, making it a valuable resource for conservation, education, and recreation. With its lush greenery, winding paths, and serene ambiance, the Nairobi Arboretum provides a peaceful retreat where visitors can escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature.

Nairobi Arboretum

Established in 1907, the Nairobi Arboretum was originally intended for research and experimentation with tree species suitable for Kenya's climate and soil conditions. Over the years, it has evolved into a popular recreational destination and educational resource for both locals and tourists. Today, the arboretum features over 300 tree species, including indigenous varieties such as acacias, figs, and crotons, as well as exotic species from around the world.

Time to Visit

The Nairobi Arboretum is open to visitors daily from sunrise to sunset, providing ample opportunities to explore its natural wonders and scenic beauty. While the arboretum is accessible year-round, the best time to visit is during the dry season (from June to September and from January to February), when the weather is pleasant and conducive to outdoor activities such as picnics, nature walks, and birdwatching. However, visitors should be prepared for occasional rain showers during the wet season (from March to May and from October to December), as Nairobi experiences a tropical climate with two rainy seasons.

Entry Fee

Admission to the Nairobi Arboretum is free of charge, making it accessible to visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a birdwatcher, or simply looking for a peaceful spot to relax and unwind, the arboretum welcomes everyone to enjoy its natural beauty and tranquility without any financial barrier. Donations are always appreciated and help support the maintenance and conservation efforts of the arboretum's diverse plant life and ecosystems.

Time Required for Travel

Traveling to the Nairobi Arboretum is convenient, as it is centrally located in Nairobi's Kilimani area, just a short distance from the city center. The arboretum is easily accessible by car, taxi, or public transportation, with ample parking available for those driving. The travel time may vary depending on your starting point within Nairobi, but most visitors can reach the arboretum within 15 to 30 minutes. Once there, plan to spend at least an hour or two exploring the arboretum's trails, gardens, and botanical collections, although nature enthusiasts may choose to extend their visit for a more immersive experience.

Traveling Tips

Before visiting the Nairobi Arboretum, it's advisable to wear comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for walking, as the arboretum's trails may be uneven or muddy in some areas, especially during the rainy season. Bring along a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent to protect yourself from the sun and mosquitoes, as well as a bottle of water to stay hydrated during your visit. Consider packing a picnic lunch or snacks to enjoy amidst the arboretum's scenic surroundings, but be sure to clean up after yourself and dispose of any trash responsibly. Lastly, respect the arboretum's rules and regulations, such as staying on designated trails and refraining from picking or damaging any plants or wildlife, to ensure a pleasant experience for yourself and other visitors.

Galavant Africa Safaris was absolutely brilliant in organising our safari to Kenya. We were a family of 4 travelling to Kenya for the first time: from the moment we were received to the time we departed the planning in which things were done was nothing short of fantastic. They understood our budget and the fact that we had two small children with us was carried out in the most efficient manner. Highly highly recommended. If you want that Kenyan dream holiday to come true make sure you use Galavant Africa Safaris. ...more

Bottom line up front: the best trip EVER. That is a bold statement because I have been to over 50 countries (including 8 African countries). The accommodations, the people, the country, our guide and the animals defied all expectations. To start with Kosen (the owner of the tour company) arranged the trip to be exactly what we asked for. No detail was spared. It was our 30th anniversary and there was a special touch at every stop. More importantly, they sponsor schools in the bush to make sure the kids get a chance for education. They have recued young girls and built dormitories so they can get an education and autonomy. Furthermore, they sponsor soccer teams in the slums of Nairobi for impoverished urban kids and create academic support and tutoring programs to help lift them out of poverty. If you book with Kosen, you make a difference and have s to directly give back to the warm and wonderful Kenyan people. ...more

An enjoyable day trip from Nairobi We took a day trip of Nairobi National Park, Giraffe centre and Karen Blixen museum from Safarilinks. The communication with Douglas was prompt, transparent and professional. Our driver and guide Titus was friendly and knowledgeable. Even though it was raining in the morning and we couldn't see lions because of that, we still saw Rhinos, Hippos, Giraffes, Zebras, Impalas, Buffaloes, Crocodiles, Antelopes and lots of birds in their natural habitat. We had a nice day trio and would recommend this company to fellow travelers. ...more

Everything was very well communicated and they ensured that we had a memorable experience. The owner - Anne was very helpful for choosing very good lodges for our stay during the trip. Our trip started off with Dennis receiving us at the Nairobi airport and he led us to Duncan, who was our guide and driver for the whole Safari. Duncan is amazing,he is very very well informed, knowledgeable and has a great eye to spot animals. He is very pleasant, friendly and flexible. ...more
