History of Uhuru Park

Established in 1969, Uhuru Park holds significant historical and cultural significance for the people of Kenya. Originally known as "Central Park," the park was renamed "Uhuru," meaning "freedom" in Swahili, to commemorate Kenya's independence from British colonial rule in 1963. Over the years, Uhuru Park has served as a venue for political rallies, public demonstrations, and cultural celebrations, playing a central role in the country's democratic struggles and social movements.

Time to Visit

Uhuru Park is open to visitors year-round, providing a welcome retreat from the urban hustle and bustle. The park's expansive grounds and diverse attractions make it an ideal destination for picnics, leisurely strolls, and outdoor activities. While the park is busiest on weekends and during public holidays, visitors can enjoy a quieter experience on weekdays, when the park is less crowded. The park's hours of operation typically vary depending on the season and any scheduled events, so it's advisable to check the park's official website or contact the authorities for updated information before planning your visit.

Entry Fee

Entry to Uhuru Park is free of charge, making it accessible to all visitors. Whether you're looking to relax by the lake, take a leisurely stroll through the gardens, or simply enjoy the scenic views, Uhuru Park welcomes everyone to enjoy its natural beauty and tranquil ambiance without any financial barrier. However, visitors may need to pay a nominal fee for certain activities or amenities within the park, such as boat rides on the lake or guided tours.

Time Required for Travel

Traveling to Uhuru Park is convenient, as it is centrally located in Nairobi's city center. The park is easily accessible by car, taxi, or public transportation, with designated parking areas available for those driving. The travel time may vary depending on your starting point within Nairobi, but most visitors can reach the park within 30 to 45 minutes. Once there, plan to spend at least a couple of hours exploring the park's various attractions and enjoying its serene surroundings, although you may choose to extend your visit for a full day of relaxation and recreation.

Traveling Tips

Before visiting Uhuru Park, it's advisable to pack sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of drinking water to stay hydrated, especially on hot and sunny days. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for walking, as the park's terrain may be uneven in some areas. Consider bringing along a picnic blanket and some snacks to enjoy a leisurely meal amidst the park's scenic beauty. Lastly, be mindful of the park's rules and regulations, such as avoiding littering and respecting the natural environment and wildlife, to ensure a pleasant experience for yourself and other visitors.

Galavant Africa Safaris was absolutely brilliant in organising our safari to Kenya. We were a family of 4 travelling to Kenya for the first time: from the moment we were received to the time we departed the planning in which things were done was nothing short of fantastic. They understood our budget and the fact that we had two small children with us was carried out in the most efficient manner. Highly highly recommended. If you want that Kenyan dream holiday to come true make sure you use Galavant Africa Safaris. ...more

An enjoyable day trip from Nairobi We took a day trip of Nairobi National Park, Giraffe centre and Karen Blixen museum from Safarilinks. The communication with Douglas was prompt, transparent and professional. Our driver and guide Titus was friendly and knowledgeable. Even though it was raining in the morning and we couldn't see lions because of that, we still saw Rhinos, Hippos, Giraffes, Zebras, Impalas, Buffaloes, Crocodiles, Antelopes and lots of birds in their natural habitat. We had a nice day trio and would recommend this company to fellow travelers. ...more

Thanks to Anne and all the team at Amazing Memories Safaris for making our (my son and I) first trip and safari to Kenya a great experience. All the pre-trip itinerary options and selections were done very well; in fact I had initially booked to travel in March, but managed to break my leg in February, so had to change our travel dates to July. Anne reorganised the trip with no problem, finding us accommodation in what was of course an already mostly fully booked peak safari season. Our trip did not get off to the best start as we missed our connection from Europe to Nairobi due to a late incoming flight. Anne reorganised the team to pick us up at the airport very (very) early the morning after our scheduled arrival no problem. The safari part (6 nights: 1 in Treetops, 1 in Lake Nakuru, 4 in Masai Mara) all ran like clockwork, our driver John was excellent as both our guide and driver. All we had to worry about was getting to the hotel receptions each morning and afternoon, where John was always waiting, ready to go. In terms of game sightings, we saw all the Big Five and many other species, including cheetah. In the Masai Mara, we saw 28 lions, including 18 on one day, in 3 different sightings, all very close up. Of course, sometimes it is the luck of the day, but we were very happy with what we saw. While we joined the sightings where many vehicles had already gathered which is normal (for lions, leopard and cheetah - the drivers / guides keep in touch by radio to see where the action is), John also had the patience to look in many areas on our own, away from the main tracks, and this produced a leopard only a few feet from us, which we were able to enjoy by ourselves. Once again, many thanks to Anne and the team. ...more

This was our first time in Kenya, and we had the best time there with Amazing Memories Safaris. Everything from pick-up to the final drop-off was perfect. Everything was very well communicated and they ensured that we had a memorable experience. The owner - Anne was very helpful for choosing very good lodges for our stay during the trip. Our trip started off with Dennis receiving us at the Nairobi airport and he led us to Duncan, who was our guide and driver for the whole Safari. Duncan is amazing,he is very very well informed, knowledgeable and has a great eye to spot animals. He is very pleasant, friendly and flexible. ...more
