The original name of Martyrs' Square was Piazza Italia, but it got the name Green Square during the Gaddafi government of Libya. It was named Martyrs' Square by the locals of Libya, to demarcate the end of Gaddafi rule. The square is an historical piece of Italian architecture from the colonial era of Libya, undergoing constant renovation and development with the passing time.
