Famously known as the Thousand Lake Trek, this trek starts from Genekha and ends at Chamgang which is within the Thimphu district. You will be witnessing multitude of pristine crystal clear lakes and stunning view of some of the world’s highest peaks including Mt. Everest, Jomolhari, Masang Gang, Jichu Drake, Gangche Ta and many more. You yourself will be hiking thought 4 passes (highest pass bring at the altitude of more than 4500 m).

Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrive Paro

    On arrival at Paro airport, you will be met by our representative. They will lead you to your hotel. By evening we will visit the Paro market and town and Spending the overnight at the hotel in Paro.

  • Day 2 : Paro

    The next morning we will visit to Ta Dzong, built in 1651 as a watchtower. Later it was inaugurated as Bhutan’s National Museum. The collections in the museum include art, relics, religious thangkha paintings, postage stamps, coins and handicrafts, as well as a small natural history collection. After which we will visit the Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong), ‘the fortress of the heap of jewels’, built in 1646, and now housing the offices of the district administration and Paro’s monk body.
    After lunch we will visit one of the oldest and sacred shrines in Bhutan knows as Kyichu Lhakhang which was built by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century.

  • Day 3 : Paro to Thimphu (55 km, 2 hours)

    We will be driving to the Capital city which will probably take us 2 hrs, after which we will be visiting the following places in Thimphu:
    National Memorial Chorten;
    Tashichhodzong (the fortress of the glorious religion);
    National Library;
    Institute for Zorig Chusum (Bhutanese arts and crafts school);
    National Institute of Traditional Medicine
    Handicrafts Emporium.

  • Day 4 : Thimphu to Geynekha

    Distance 14 km
    Estimated time 4 hours
    Our day begins with a 45 minutes’ drive to reach the starting point of the trek. The first day of trek will be an easy hike of around 3 hrs. We will be walking along a mule path and get to see some amazing terraced fields and coniferous forest. Our trek for the day will end at Genekha School and we will be camping at Genekha alongside a stream (2800 m).

  • Day 5 : Geynekha to Gur

    Distance 15 km
    Estimated time 4 hours
    We will be able to see the true communion with nature in today’s trek. And you will see many varieties of alpine plants and also some animals and many birds. After two hours of walking slowly uphill, rest at a huge rock platform, from which there is a picturesque view of the valley below. After another two hours the trek we will reach our campsite. Camp is at a place known as Gur, where flowers are abundant in spring.

  • Day 6 : Gur to Labatamba

    Distance 12 km
    Estimated time 5 hours

    As you walk over the ridges, you can enjoy the beauty of the rugged mountain vegetation. Today's walk takes us through meadows with wild asparagus and other small plants, and if you do this walk in the spring, it feels like you're walking on carpets of flowers. Right after hike through the first pass, it opens up a wonderful view of the entire Dagala region, the alluvial plains and the camps of the yak herders. We have lunch at a nearby yak shepherd camp. After lunch, we walk across hills and meadows and end our three-day walk at Yutsho Lake, which is teeming with golden trout. We will be camping near the lake.

  • Day 7 : Labatamba Halt

    This day is for an excursion to any one of three lakes: Relitsho, Hentsho and Jamatsho. Your trekking leader will tell you mystical stories about these lakes. This would also be an ideal time and place for some trout fishing.

  • Day 8 : Labatamba Halt

    It’s time to get refreshed with an easy hike to Setsho Lake. During this day you could spend the day fishing for trout. If you wish to you could also go visit the nearby lake known as Jagetsho Lake. Or you could try climbing Jomo, a 5,050 m peak. Lunch at the summit, with spectacular views all around, can be memorable experience. Return to camp by dusk and prepare for the next day. .

  • Day 9 : Labatama to Panka

    Distance 8 km
    Estimated time 4 hours
    Walk for 20 minutes upwards before beginning the descent at around 4,460 m. There will be splendid views of the Himalayas on the descent. Your escort will help you in identifying individual peaks such as Everest, Kanchenjunga, Chomolhari, Jichu Drake, Tserimgang, Khangbum, Masagang, Tsendegang and Gangchenta.
    Our camp will be set at Panka.

  • Day 10 : Panka to Talekha

    Distance 8 km
    Estimated time 4 hours
    This day entails the crossing of several increasingly impressive passes. You will see several varieties of the blue poppy (if trekking June-July) and also many mountain birds along the way. Lunch at the point where the trail divides into two paths leading to Talekha and to Wangduephodrang respectively. After lunch, an hour’s gradual climb brings us to the top of the last ridge on the Dagala range from where there is a spectacular view of Thimphu valley below. Another hour’s walk and you are at the last camp, a little above Talekha monastery
    This day includes some increasingly impressive passes. On the way, you can see several types of blue poppy (if you trek in June-July) and also many mountain birds. Lunch will be served at the point where the track splits into two tracks leading to Talekha and Wangduephodrang respectively. After lunch, a one-hour gradual ascent takes you to the top of the last Ridge of Dagala Mountain, where you can enjoy incredible views of Thimphu Valley below. Another hour of walking and you are at the last camp, above the Talekha monastery

  • Day 11 : Talekha to Thimphu to Paro

    Distance 6 km
    Estimated time 2 hours

    Passing through alpine and mixed vegetation (bamboo thickets and wild flowers) we will reach Talekha monastery and village. We walk through mixed vegetation and apple orchards, finally reaching the main motor able road to Thimphu where our transport is waiting for us. Drive to Thimphu in time for lunch, and in the evening drive back to Paro. Have a relaxing night at the hotel in Paro.

  • Day 12 : Depart Paro

    After early breakfast in the hotel, drive to the airport for flight to onward destination.

  • The Government of Bhutan requires all trekking to be done with a registered trekking operator in Bhutan. All trekking with us will be accompanied by trekker trained professionals including a trekking guide, cook, and few horsemen. The cost will be higher for solo trekkers but the cost will come down as the number increases as the cost will be shared.

  • Trekking through the Himalayas of Bhutan could be physically and mentally demanding but it’s definitely worth it for its beautiful nature and clear air as Bhutan being a carbon negative country.
  • The best time for trekking in Bhutan is in spring and autumn. Enjoy the beauty of blossom of flowers in the month of April and May and clear views in November.
  • On the trek through different places of Bhutan we would be able to view forest, snow-peaked mountains, rhododendron forests, traditional farm houses, wild animals, alpine meadows and villages.
  • An experienced guide will be provided on all treks. Professional cooks and horses for transportation will also be available. You will only need to carry your bag-pack.
  • The trek takes us over some of the highest passes in Bhutan ranging from an altitude of 3000 m to 5000 m. The trek varies from a short four day hike up to three week long hike. . Depending on altitude, a trekking day is usually about 6 to 7 hours (including stops) and almost all trekking in Bhutan involves overnights in a tents.
  • We also provide other adventurous services such as one day hike across Bhutan, mountain biking, rafting and kayaking.
