The Laya-Gasa Trek is considered one of the most picturesque treks in Bhutan, offering amazing views of some of the most unspoiled and pure landscapes in Bhutan. The first five days of this trek follow the same route as the Jomolhari Trek On the sixth day the path diverges and you will depart Lingshi for the camp site at Chebisa, a charming little village adorned with a beautiful waterfall of crystal clear water.
This is one of the most difficult treks offered in Bhutan due to its high altitude and its path. This trek demands both Physical and mental strength but along the trail you will be able to spot indigenous animals such as blue sheep and Takins, remote mountain villages and the famous hot spring of Gasa.
Day 1 : Arrive Paro
On arrival at Paro airport, you will be met by our representative. They will lead you to your hotel. By evening we will visit the Paro market and town and Spending the overnight at the hotel in Paro.
Day 2 : Paro
The next morning we will visit to Ta Dzong, built in 1651 as a watchtower. Later it was inaugurated as Bhutan’s National Museum. The collections in the museum include art, relics, religious thangkha paintings, postage stamps, coins and handicrafts, as well as a small natural history collection. After which we will visit the Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong), ‘the fortress of the heap of jewels’, built in 1646, and now housing the offices of the district administration and Paro’s monk body.
After lunch we will visit one of the oldest and sacred shrines in Bhutan knows as Kyichu Lhakhang which was built by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century.
Day 3 : Paro to Shana 17 km, 5-6 hours of trekking
We will be starting our trek on the third day. The trek of 17 km’s begins from Drukgyel Dzong which is at a high of 2580m with a short downhill walk on a wide trail.
The trek starts from Drukgyel Dzong (2,580m) with a short downhill walk on a wide trail. The trail then climbs gently through well maintained rice terraces and fields of millet. After which we will be come across an apple orchards and then forests. Soon the valley widens, and we reach the army post of Gunitsawa (2,810m). This is the last stop before Tibet. From there we will be moving upwards and beyond Sharma Zampa (2,870), where there are several good camping places in meadows surrounded by trees. We will be camping there and start our journey the next morning.
Day 4 : Shana to Soi Thangthangkha 20km, 7-8 hours of trekking
On the 2nd day of trek we will be walking along the Pa Chu (Paro River), ascending and descending through pine, oak and spruce forests. After crossing a bridge to the left bank of the river, we will be stopping for a lunch. Then we continue walking along the river, climbing upwards through rhododendron forests, and crossing the river once more before reaching our campsite (3,750 m).
Day 5 : Soi Thangthangka to Jangothang 19km, 7-8 hours
The trail gets steeper but the view gets better. On the 3rd day of trekking we will be climbing another 350 m and reach our campsite at Jangothang which is at 4,040 m. During this trek we will be crossing an army camp and then follow the same river. After few more hrs of trekking we will able to see the spectacular view of the surrounding peaks. Hot lunch is served at a yak herder’s camp. From our campsite we will be able to view the Jhomolhari and Jichu Drake which are incredibly stunning.
Day 6 : Jangothang to Lingshi 18km, 7-8 hours
You will be able to experience a breathtaking view of the nature for the next 7-8 hrs of our trek. We will be able to view beautiful mountains, stream and forest. For the first hr of our walk we will follow a stream leading to the start of our first ridge. You will enjoy the astonishing view of Jhamolhari, Jichu Drake and Tserimgang. The trail then takes us across a fairly level valley floor until the climb up to Nyele-la pass (4,700m). We descend gradually from the pass to our camp site at Lingshi (4,000m), enjoying a panoramic view of the mountain peaks and Lingshi Dzong as we walk.
Day 7 : Lingshi – Chebisa 10 km, 7-8 hours
Today is the shortest walking day and you can really take it easy. Soon after starting, you will reach the chorten below the Lingshi Dzong. Here you can choose to stay on the main road or turn to Lingshi Dzong (4220m), which is right on top of the high ridge. This Dzong is being rebuilt after the earthquake (2011) which damaged its central building. In addition to the special atmosphere of mystical silence, Lingshi Dzong offers magnificent views of the valley. After Lingshi Dzong, you will pass the villages of Lingshi and Goyul. In Goyul, the stone houses are gathered together to form a small, compact village, unusual in Bhutan, where settlements tend to be scattered. When you arrive at the Chebisa camp, you will have enough time to visit the village houses if you wish. Behind the village there is also a beautiful waterfall, which is worth visiting.
Day 8 : Chebisa – Shomuthang 17 km, 6-7 hours
The morning begins with a long ascent from behind Chebisa village (2-3 hours) through a large pasture to Gobu La (pass). Along the way you will see some people herding yaks. There is also a great chance to see large herds of blue sheep over the track. After passing Gobu La (4410m) you descend into a valley, then climb a bit before descending again into Shakshepasa (3980), a large U-shaped valley. Climbing from here, you will eventually reach the Shomuthang Campsite above the river, which is a tributary of the Nochu River.
Day 9 : Shomuthang – Robluthang Distance 18 km, 6-7 hours
You will start by climbing the valley to see Kang Bum (6526m) and the alpine valleys. After two hours of climbing, you will reach Jhari La (4750 m), where you will have the first glimpse of the Sinche La Pass, which must be crossed the next day. The great snow peak in the north is Gangchhenta 6840 m, better known as the Great Tiger Mountain. On a clear day, Tserim Kang and Djomolhar peak can be seen. The riverside camp is called Tsheri Jathang, situated in a beautiful wide and secluded valley. Herds of Takin, the national animal of Bhutan, migrate to this valley in summer and stay there for about four months. The valley has been declared a takin sanctuary. Climb up a bit and you will reach the Robluthang campsite in a rocky meadow.
Day 10 : Robluthang – Limithang Distance 19 km, 6-7 hours
The trek begins with an initial 40-60 minute ascent, after which it gradually ascends for another 1.5 hours through a boulder field. After that, it's a 1-hour steep climb before you reach Sinche La (5005m), the last and highest junction of the trek, unless you plan to continue the snowman trek past Laya. Descending to the other side of the pass, you will see an impressive terminal moraine and a glacial lake at the bottom of the valley. Classic examples of lateral moraines can be seen, where the glacier moved up rocks on both sides of the valley. Under the moraine you cross the Kango Chhu and soon reach the Limithang campsite. Gangchhenta Peak goes above the campsite, although it is quite far away.
Day 11 : Limithang – Laya Distance 10 km, 4-5 hours
Today you walk down a narrow winding river valley. For a long time the road leads through a densely wooded area. The road leads to the west side of Laya village. The western side of the village offers a magnificent view of Mount Gangchhenta and the range of Mount Masagang. In the center of the village there is a village school and a first level medical center with telephone connection. The campsite is located below the school.
Day 12 : Laya – Koina Distance 19 km, 6-7 hours
The trail winds up and down the Mo Chhu River valley, avoiding natural obstacles and offering breathtaking views of the raging river, rapids and waterfalls. Many ascents and descents take you to Kohi Lapcha at an altitude of 3,300 meters. The trek then descends to the large stream of Koina Chhu where you will find the Koina campsite.
Day 13 : Koina – Gasa (Finish) Distance 14 km, 6-7 hours
Today you will have the last major climb of the Laya Gasa Trek. You will cross Bari La at an altitude of 3,740m, after which the trail descends all the way until you reach Gasa village (2,770m). Where you will find the first restaurants since you started from Drukgyel Dzong.
From there will have a choice to stay in Gasa village or descend for another hour to the Gasa Tsachu (hot springs) and relax in the rejuvenating mineral water. The Gasa Tsachu is one of the most popular hot springs in Bhutan.
Our Laya Gasa trek ends at Gasa from where we can continue on to the next trek after few day of rest or return back to the Paro airport.
