Cape Town is home to one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature and one of the most widely recognised mountains in the world. Flat as a table on top, and often with a tablecloth of cloud, it remains one of the most exquisite views to behold at the southern end of Africa.
You’ll have 14 magnificent days to explore, starting off with the bustling and sophisticated city of Cape Town, nestled between mountains, beaches and Winelands, admire the sunset at Fish River Canyon, journey over the Namib Desert with its splendid red dunes, go on safari in Etosha National Park and finish in one of the smallest and cleanest capital cities in the world, Windhoek where you can treat yourself to the famous locally brewed beer, the Windhoek Lager.
This tour gives you several nights of camping under the African sky and transport in an Adventure Overland Safari Vehicle (fitted with 20 Ultimate Safari Seats), which will ensure that you’ll get an unforgettable camping experience in Africa. With time to explore on your own and optional activities including hikes and skydiving, you’ll soak up the beauty and diversity of Southern Africa.
Day 1 : Cape Town
Explore the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town during the day and meet your group and your Tour Leader in the evening at 18:00 to get acquainted and review your trip details. Cape Town offers an unbelievable variety of experiences, tastes and sightseeing. Try a variety of exotic tastes, like some of the delicious Cape Malay curries, the famous local dish Bobotie, or the freshest seafood at one of exquisite seafood restaurants at the V&A Waterfront. Make sure to arrive a day early to go to world famous Robben Island where former President Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison, visit Cape Point or go with a cable car up Table Mountain to enjoy a panoramic view of Cape Town from the top.
Day 2 : Cape Town to Trawal
This morning you will leave behind the delights of Cape Town and depart on the first leg of your journey into the unknown. The first overnight stop will be on a small vineyard farm in the vicinity of the Cederberg Mountains. Here grapes are produced for the local cellars and you will have the opportunity to taste and buy some of the local wines in an optional wine tasting activity.
Day 3 : Trawal to Gariep River
Travel north through the Northern Cape’s vast fields of wild flowers (in bloom between August and November). We continue north to reach the Namibian border by midday. Head to the Namibian side of the South Africa / Namibia border. End the day with a spectacular sunset viewed from a nearby hill.
Day 4 : Gariep River to the Fish River Canyon
Wake up to a quiet morning while you watch the sun rise over the Gariep River, peacefully gliding along its way. You can have a slow morning and sleep in a bit or go on an optional canoe trip down the river. Later during the morning, you travel to the Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa. As the sun slips over the canyon’s rim, experience an awe-inspiring sunset to end your day of exploration.
Day 5 : Fish River Canyon to Sesriem
Today you have and early departure and a long drive north to the Namib Desert. On the way to Sesriem you will pass the small towns of Bethanien and Helmeringhausen and a farm settlement here and there, but other than that it will mostly just be the wide open Namibian landscape with spectacular scenery. When you arrive in the late afternoon, you will visit the Sesriem Canyon and admire the lofty red sand dunes in the distance that form a gateway into the Namib Desert, which means “vast place.” The next morning you will visit Sossusvlei and Deadvlei.
Day 6 : Sesriem to Boesman’s Camp
An early departure will allow you to experience a beautiful desert sunrise over the dunes. Climb the majestic Dune 45 before continuing to the entrance of Sossusvlei, a seemingly endless expanse of sand dunes. In the afternoon, you’ll have the option of a guided walk during which you’ll explore these desert dunes and learn about the survival skills of many of the different inhabitants of the desert, including the San (Bushmen).
Day 7 : Boesman’s Camp to Swakopmund
Depart for the Atlantic coast, to the holiday town Swakopmund. There will be plenty opportunities to stop for photos along the way as you cross the Tropic of Capricorn and drive through the surreal landscapes of the Kuiseb and Gaub passes. You’ll have plenty of free time to explore Swakopmund at your leisure and indulge in a wide variety of activities. This beach resort town’s German influences can be seen to this day in its German-inspired architecture and its many German-speaking inhabitants.
Day 8 : Swakopmund
Swakopmund’s variety of attractions and activities, cater for all tastes and styles. You can take a walk along the beach and dip your toes in the icy Atlantic Ocean, or visit the Kristal Gallery which boasts with the largest Quartz Crystal Cluster on display in the world, weighing in at 14,100 kilograms. Browse the many excellent bookshops and curio shops and spoil yourself with a unique gift from the area. If adrenalin and outdoors is your thing then you can enjoy optional activities like quad biking, sand boarding, 4×4 safaris, skydiving (weather permitting) and more.
Day 9 : Swakopmund to Brandberg (Uis Area)
We travel northeast to Brandberg which is home to Königstein, at 2,573m above sea level the highest peak in Namibia. At Brandberg we offer a variety of guided self-drive tours with our Polaris Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTV). This enables you to enjoy the spectacular scenery and wildlife of the Brandberg area as well as experience the thrill of driving one of these customised vehicles. Tours are led by professional local guides and backup includes satellite phone communications and vehicle tracking.
We suggest booking the 4-hours White Lady Ultimate Adventure – a self-drive of fun and adventure. On this trip, you visit the famous White Lady Bushmen Painting. You depart early morning and drive through breath-taking scenery along the Ugab River surrounded by multicoloured rocks that take on various shades of flaming orange. Have fun with some 4×4 sand driving and a drive through the rocky terrain leading through local villages towards the famous painting’s entrance. From the entrance, it is approximately an hours’ hike to The White Lady Painting. After the hike, we return to the lodge following various small tracks and riverbeds. Around the lodge area, there is a good chance to see the famous desert elephant, sometimes casually wandering into the lodge premises.
Day 10 : Brandberg to Kamanjab
We overnight about 20 km outside Kamanjab on a family farm. This extraordinary place offers guided tours around an authentic Himba village. Experience in depth the life and ways of living of the last traditional tribe in Namibia. Ever heard of a smoke bath? Learn about their beliefs in their ancestors and herbal medicine, their hairstyles and jewellery imitating the status of each tribe member as well as their close relationship with nature, their cattle and children.
Day 11 : Kamanjab to Etosha
Travel through the vast expanses of Northern Namibia to the Etosha National Park, one of Southern Africa’s most loved wildlife sanctuaries. This trip goes through a previously restricted area in the park. Head out for a game drive to search for elephant, antelope and lion around their watering holes. Etosha is home to more than 100 species of mammals including the endangered black rhino. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise with species such as the famous Kori Bustard, ostrich, several vultures and eagle species and after heavy rains, you might even find water birds such as flamingos and pelicans. Observe the animals clustered around watering holes after sunset near your campsite, which is safe and well-lit with floodlights. Overnight in the newest camp in Etosha National Park. En-route to Etosha, we stop at our Africa4us Kids Project.
Day 12 : Etosha National Park
Enjoy a full day’s game drive in your fully air-conditioned Adventure Overland Safari Vehicle. You can also book an optional night game drive. Gather memories of unique sights that you will not likely experience again. Watch how ghostly grey-white elephants bathe themselves in the white dust of the area or zoom in on the magnificent sight of giraffes etched against a wide and open horizon. Overnight in the newest camp inside Etosha National Park and maybe you are just lucky enough to fall asleep with the haunting call of hyena or a lion roaring in the distance.
Day 13 : Etosha National Park to Windhoek
Travel to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, after which you’ll trade your sleeping bag for a twin room on your last night of the tour. Spend the last few hours of the day exploring Windhoek and its strong German influence. You’ll have the option to celebrate your last night and your new friendships at one of Windhoek’s well know restaurants (budget $25-30 USD for dinner).
Day 14 : Windhoek
Our last goodbye, a healthy breakfast and the end of another incredible tour. Book a day or two extra in Windhoek to make the most of your stay. This tiny capital town has loads of interesting things to offer. One of the most famous is the display of 33 meteorites, the Gibeon Meteorites in the Post Street Mall. Here you can take pictures of and touch these extra-terrestrial bodies that are corrosive resistant due to the high amount of nickel in them. Shopping opportunities abound and for the historically inclined there are many museums and historical buildings within walking distance around the town centre. One of the most widely photographed and a historical landmark is the Christ Church, a Lutheran church, built in the Gothic revival style.
