With a height of 4,095 m, Mount Kinabalu is ranked the 20th most prominent mountain in the world and 5th in the Malay Archipelago. Millions of years ago, a huge granite dome was pushed up from the earth's crust as molten rock. This results in a spectacular rocky peak rises high above northern Borneo.
There are two versions of tales with the origin of the name. One is derived from the Kadazan Dusun word of 'Aki Nabalu', which means the revered place of the dead. The locals belief that their spirits dwell on the top of Mount Kinabalu. The second is derived from the word "Cina Balu", which means "A Chinese Widow". It is a sad story about a local woman, who was married to a Chinese prince and faithfully waiting for him to come back after he has returned to China. Although she died at the top of Mount Kinabalu, the spirit of the mountain is touched by her and turn her into a stone facing South China Sea. She can wait forever for her husband's return!
Mount Kinabalu is one of the most popular Mountains for adventurous hikers. The park authorities only allow a maximum of 120 climbers per day.
