The Marangu Route is one of the most popular routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. It's often referred to as the "Coca-Cola Route" due to its relative ease and popularity. The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It's known for its gradual slope and comfortable huts along the way, making it a favorite for many climbers. However, being the easiest route doesn't mean it's without challenges, and climbers still need to acclimatize properly and be prepared for the altitude.
Day 1 : Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
The trek begins at the Marangu Gate (1860 m/6100 ft), where climbers register and start hiking through the rain forest.
The first day is relatively easy, covering around 8 kilometers (5 miles) and taking about 4-6 hours.
You'll reach Mandara Hut (2720 m/8921 ft), where you'll spend the night. The huts provide basic accommodation with bunk beds.
Day 2 : Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
The second day involves hiking through moorland with occasional views of Kibo Peak.
The distance covered is approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) and takes about 5-7 hours.
You'll ascend to Horombo Hut (3720 m/12205 ft), where you'll spend the night. This day helps with acclimatization.
Day 3 : Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
This day is spent at Horombo Hut for acclimatization purposes.
You may take short hikes in the surrounding area to gain altitude and then descend to sleep lower, aiding in the acclimatization process.
This day is crucial for allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude.
Day 4 : Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
On day four, you'll trek through the alpine desert, passing the "last water point."
The distance covered is approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), taking about 6–8 hours.
You'll arrive at Kibo Hut (4700 m/15420 ft), which is the last stop before attempting the summit.
Day 5 : Summit Day and Descent to Marangu Gate
You'll start the summit attempt in the early hours of the morning, usually around midnight, to reach the summit (Uhuru Peak at 5895 m/19341 ft) by sunrise.
The ascent is challenging, both physically and mentally, but reaching the summit is incredibly rewarding.
After summiting, you'll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.
From Horombo Hut, you'll descend further to Marangu Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificates and celebrate your accomplishment.
