Exploring Chanshal Pass and Jaunsar-Bawar is a thrilling experience. The drive is on some of the narrowest roads with quite steep ascent, broken dirt trail while visiting Chanshal Pass and unexplored towns of Chakrata, Tiuni and Govind Wildlife. Jaunsar-Bawar lies between the Yamuna and Tons river in the state of Uttarakhand and is inhabited by the Jaunsaris and bawaris, which traces its origin from the Pandavas of Mahabharata & Rajputs of Rajasthan. This is relatively unexplored region of the Himalayas with is rich wildlife, Waterfalls, Dense forests and magnificient view of snow capped Himalayas.The entry point is about 60 Km from the sate capital Dehradun and extends till the Himachal border. Govind Wildlife sancturary is also the getaway to many popular treks like Har-Ki-Dun, Kedarkantha, Rupin Pass and Ruhinstera Tal trek.
This tour begins as you arrive at Dehradun and take the 90 Km drive to Chakrata which is restricted to foreign Nationals. Head further up to Tiuni which is a border town with Rohru in Himachal, drive deep into Govind wildlife sancturary and descend down to Barkot which is the base to travel to Yamunotri Dham.
Chakrata is restricted to foreign Nationals. This picturesque hill station is situated at an elevation of 2270 meters and covered by thick dense Deodar forest with charming environment, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Tiger Falls tumbling from a height of 312 feet and Kimona Fall are popular waterfalls along with Budher Caves which are key attractions. Nearby is Mundali which is a scenic destination famous for magnificient view of snow capped Himalayas and is one of the best places for skiing in winters and Kanasar meadow surrounded by thick Deodar forest on the Chakrata Tiuni road.
Chanshal Pass also known as Chanshal valley is one of the unexplored region in the Shimla district in Himachal Pradesh. The pass sits atop Chanshal Peak, which at 4,520 metres and links the last villages of Dodra and Kwar. Rohru is the base to drive uo to this pass and can be reached from Shimla in Himachal and from Tiuni in Uttarakhand. Chanshal pass is about 40 Kms uphill drive from Rohru into the Pabbar Valley while driving along Pabbar River which originates from the Chanshal Ranges and pass small villages of Chirgaon and Larot. The last 20 Kms from Larot to Chansal Pass is a dirt road which further heads towards the last Indian villages of Dodra and Kuwar. Chanshal Pass remains open from May to October and is covered with snow for the rest of the year because of heay snow fall.
Govind National Park, also known as Govind Pashu Vihar is located faraway in the district Uttarkashi. This region is a trekkers’ paradise and act as a base camp for with many popular treks like Har-Ki-Dun, Kedarkantha, Rupin Pass and Ruhinsaratal trek. Naitwar is the entry point of this Park with multiple check post till the last road head at Sankri. One has to trek to Taluka, Osla and Pashu vihar to explore this region in detail.Tons river flows through the region surrounded by pristine forests and snowy peaks. There are about 15 species of mammals and 150 species of birds that call Govind Wildlife Sanctuary their home. The most notable of these animals are the Snow leopard, Himalayan Black bear, Brown bear, Musk deer, Bharal, Himalayan Tahr, Serow and Common leopard. The endangered birds found in this region are Monal Pheasant, Koklas Pheasant, Bearded Vulture Himalayan Snow fowl, Golden Eagle, Western Tragopan, Steppe Eagle and Black Eagle. Other varieties of birds include Owls, Pigeons, Minivets, Thrush, Warblers, Bulbul, Cuckoo and Finches
Day 1 : Dehradun-Chakrata
This exciting journey begins from as you arrive at Dehradun and drive 90 Kms uphill to Chakrata. Pease note Chakrata is restricted for foreign Nationals. On arrival at Chakrata you check-in at the hotel and later go out for Cave exploration at Budher Caves or visit Tiger Falls which is a return trek of about 5 Kms. Stay overnight in Chakrata.
Day 2 : Chakrata – Tiuni – Rohru
Easy morning as we drive through the dense forest range of Kanasar to Tiuni, this is about 82 Kms from Chakrata. At Tuini which is the Confluence of Pabbar-Tons Rivers, we cross over to Himachal’s bodering town of Hatkoti and further drive 40 Kms to Rohru which is the base to travel to Chanshal Pass. Enroute visit the Hatkoti Temple which is noted for its unique architecture dates back to the Gupta period. Stay overnight in Rohru.
Day 3 : Rohru – Chanshal Pass – Rohru
An exciting day today as we head to explore the mighty Chanshal Pass. Chanshal pass is about 40 Kms uphill drive from Rohru into the Pabbar Valley while driving along Pabbar River which originates from the Chanshal Ranges and pass small villages of Chirgaon and Larot. The last 20 Kms from Larot to Chansal Pass is a dirt road which further heads towards the last Indian villages of Dodra and Kuwar. Once at Chanshal Pass spend a couple of hours walking in the meadow and later return back to Rohru. Rest of the evening is at leisure. Stay overnight in Rohru.
Day 4 : Rohru – Tiuni – Sankri –Naugaon
This will be another day when you would explore Govind National Park. Early drive back to Hatkoti and cross over to Tiuni in Uttarakhand and head towards Govind Wildlife sancturary, enroute visit Mahasu Devta Temple at Hanol. At Mori there is a detour of about 25 Kms which takes you to Sankri which is the last moterable roadhead in Govind wildlife sancturary. Spend sometime admiring this beautiful unexplored region and later return back to Mori and drive on the route to Naugaon via Purola. On arrival at Naugaon you check in at the hotel and rest of the evening is at leisure. Stay overnight in Naugaon.
Day 5 : Naugaon – Mussoorie – Dehradun
Today is the last day of our travel as we drive back for about 4 hours to Dehradun via Mussoorie. Enroute we will visit Lakhamandal and spend sometime at Yamuna Bridge.
