One of the most important tourist attractions of Chennai is actually in the neighboring town of Mahabalipuram with its ancient temples and rock carvings of the 7th century Pallava kingdom.
Fort St. George: The British East India Company under the direct supervision of Francis Day and Andrew Cogon built it in 1640 AD. This place achieved its name from Saint George, the patron saint of England. The fort houses Saint Mary's Church and fort museum. Saint Mary's Church the oldest Anglican Church built in 1680 and the tombstones in its courtyard are the oldest British tombstones in India. It presently house the Secretariat and Legislative Assembly. The 46 m high flagstaff at the front is a mast salvaged from the 17th century shipwreck. The Fort Museum has a fascinating collection of memorabilia from the British and French East India companies as well as the Raj and Muslim period.
San Thome Basilica: San Thome Basilica at the south end of Marina Beach was named after Saint Thomas (Doubting Thomas). It is believed that he had come to Chennai in 52 AD and was killed at St. Thomas Mount just outside the city in 78 AD. Built in 16th Century by the Portuguese, in 1896 it was made a basilica. The beautiful stained glass window at the basilica portrays the story of St Thomas and the central hall has 14 wooden plaques depicting scenes from the last days of Christ. In the cathedral is a 3ft. high statue of Virgin Mary believed to have been brought from Portugal in 1543.
After breakfast at the hotel you will be driven for excursion to Tirupati. On arrival at Tirupati visit Tirupati Balaji Temple. Later in the evening get driven back to Chennai. Rest and stay cvernight at the hotel.
Tirupati is located in Andhra Pradesh. Tirupati is an ancient Hindu temple town having historical references in Puranas. The temple of Lord Venkateswara is located on the Tirumala hill and Tirupati is at the foot steps of the Tirumala hills. Every day around 1 lakh people visit this place. It has great reputation for famous temples. The newly created "Greater Tirupati" covers a large area with a population of over 10 lakhs, covering geographical area from Srikalahasti in the north to Puttur in the south, which is about 1400 sq km. Tirupati has one international airport, and is head quarters to six universities. The National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is located at Gadanki near Tirupati. NARL is engaged in fundamental research related to atmospheric and space sciences and developing various types of radars and lidars for atmospheric studies. Temples located in and around Tirupati include: 1. Sri Padmavathi Devi temple at Tiruchanooru (Alamelu Mangapuram) 2. Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Srinivasa Mangapuram. According to legend, Lord Venkateswara stayed here after his marriage with Sri Padmavathi Devi, before proceeding to Tirumala. 3. Govindaraja Swamy Temple in Tirupati adjacent to the railway station (Lord Vishnu in Anantasayanam pose). Saint Ramanujacharya consecrated this temple in 1130 AD. 4. Kapila Teertham in Tirupati town at the base of Tirumala Hills dedicated to Lord Siva 5. Sri Kodandaramaswami Temple, Tirupati built by Chola kings during the tenth century AD 6. Sri Kalahasteeswara Temple at Srikalahasti 7. Sri Kalyana Venkateswaraswami temple at Narayanavanam (40 km from Tirupati). Lord Sri Venkateswaraswami and Sri Padmavathi Ammavaru, daughter of Akasa Maharaja were married here.
After breakfast at the hotel, you will be driven to Mahabalipuram Temple towns. Reach Mahabalipuram and check in at the pre booked hotel. After sometime visit Varadarajar Perumal Temple & Kamatchi Amman Temple, Panch Raths's, Arjuna's Panance, Shore Temple. In the evening enjoy the famous beach. Overnight stay at the hotel.
Mahabalipuram: Mahabalipuram, previously known as 'Mamallapuram', is 55 kilometers off to Chennai, the capital city of Tamilnadu. Mahabalipuram, the magnificent city ashore Coromandel, was once a trading port of the Pallavas. Pallavas were the first Dravidic dynasty that ruled over the substantial portion of the peninsular India. The Pallavas rulers were famous for their appreciation and patronization of Dravidian art forms. They were the one who commissioned the magnificent monuments and temples of Mahabalipuram. Mahabalipuram beach is famous for its marvelous monuments that include sculptural panels, caves, Monolithic Rathas (chariots) and temples. The Pallavas art at this place emphasizes robust earthly beauty, imbibed with life. These monumental splendors and the sunny beach resorts attract tourists from all over the world. A crocodile farm, Snake venom extracting center, Schools of art and sculpture and a wide choice of resorts along the beach draw holiday-seekers all round the year. Mahabalipuram beaches are a good place for sunbathing and other related activities. The resorts that lay scattered all along the Coromandel offers a range of leisure activities such as diving, wind surfing and motor boating.this ancient Pallava port, is today the sight of several antique sculptural marvels. In this ancient seaside town , shrines and huge sculptures cut-out of rocks more than 1200 years back during the reign of Pallava Kings in the region can be seen. The rock carvings depicting mythological episodes - of demons, Gods and animals in battle and others - are truly poems in stone.
After breakfast at the hotel. These days will be free for personal activities. Visit the famous caves and shore temple in mahabalipuram. After sightseeing return back to hotel and rest overnight in the hotel. The Varaha Cave, a small rock-cut mandapam (hall), is a faceted and finished gem with two incarnations of Vishnu Varaha (boar) and Vamana (dwarf). The Dharmaraja Cave, built in the early seventh century, contains three empty shrines. The Mahisasurmardini Cave (mid-seventh century) , the Somaskanda sculpture radiates peace, power, and wisdom while Lord Vishnu is shown in omniscient repose in a masterpiece of dhwani (the art of suggestion). About 5 km north of Mahabalipuram is another cave called Tiger Cave, a rock-cut shrine possibly dating back to 7th century A group of structures lying at the southern extreme of Mahabalipuram, amidst casuarinas trees, are the famous Rathas (chariots). The Pancha Pandava Rathas, as they are called, are five in number. Out of these, four are carved out of a single rock, while the fifth on the west is scooped out from a small rock. Besides these, there are the Ganesha Ratha to the north of the main hill and two Pidari Rathas on the eastern side. The hut-like Draupadi Ratha sports doorkeepers and Durga with a worshipper offering his head. The Arjuna Ratha, facing west, has its outer walls carved with the most graceful figures of gods and mortals. The Sahadeva Ratha with a huge monolithic elephant in front; the Bhima Ratha with its two storeys and lion-based pillars; and, of course, the Dharamraja Ratha the biggest and finest of them all with its eight panels of exquisite sculptures provide the visitor with insight into the craftsmen's skill of a time long gone by. A three-in-one abode of God Vishnu temple sandwiched between two Shiva temples it is a visual pleasure, its precincts abounding in architectural masterpieces The Shore Temple forms the backdrop of the Mahabalipuram Dance Festival celebrated in the month of January/February every year.
