The 5-day Mount Kenya hike via the Chogoria ascent and Naromoru descent offers a thrilling and diverse trekking experience. This route combines stunning landscapes, from lush forests and alpine meadows to dramatic cliffs and glacial valleys, culminating in the breathtaking summit

Starting from Chogoria, the hike takes you through dense bamboo forests and open moorlands, revealing spectacular views of waterfalls and rocky ridges. The trail leads to the serene Lake Michaelson before reaching Point Lenana for a rewarding sunrise. The descent via Naromoru is faster, passing through vertical bogs and dense rainforest, offering a contrasting experience of Mount Kenya’s ecosystems. This trek is perfect for adventure seekers looking for a challenging yet scenic mountain expedition.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Nairobi - chogoria

  You will drive from Nairobi through central Kenya passing through Rice, tea, coffee and other agricultural farming area with a nice view of Mt. Kenya in clear weather. You will meet the service crews at Chogoria town and proceed to the mountain. The drive goes through the rain forest passing the first park gate to drop off point in the forest 2,650m. where you will start the acclimatization hike through the bamboo forest accompanied by your guides to Chogoria gate for dinner and overnight in a campsite/Bandas Huts 2,950m ( 2-3 hrs walk).

• Day 2 : Chogoria - campsite

  Today you will wake up at 07.00 am to pack and prepare for the trek. At 7.30 am, you settle for breakfast, and then leave the camp with your packed lunch and start the hike through the open woodland and then up into the moorland viewing high altitude flowers, animals and birds species to the road head where you visit the Nithi water Falls and take lunch at road head before you proceed up the ridge for another 1 hour acclimatization hike to lake Ellis 3,450m. in the afternoon and relax with the views around as far as the Peaks. Dinner and overnight in a campsite (5-6 hrs hike).

• Day 3 : Hiking - Mintos campsite

  After breakfast, you will start the hike with great views of the surrounding hills which includes Muugi hill, Ithanguni, Giant Billiards table, lake Ellis on the lower side while the higher altitude vegetation appears as you get high. As you continue with the hike up the trail, you arrive to the attractive Gorge's valley view point as far as the main Peaks at the head and have your lunch break at one of the view point. After lunch, the hike follow up the ridge along the gorge to arrive at Mintos campsite 4,200m. later in the afternoon for dinner and overnight. ( 6-7 hrs).

• Day 4 : Hiking - Met station camp

  We will arrange the wake up time at around 1.30 am. for preparations and after Tea/Coffee, you start the hike with a gentle walk at the beginning before the climb get steeper, walking along loose scree which sometimes of the year is covered by the snow to Simba campsite 4,600m. You then continue with the climb to peak Lenana to arrive the summit 4,985m. during the sunrise. This is the third highest peak in Mt. Kenya for a superb views from the summit as far as Mt. Kilimanjaro to the south in the morning during the Sunrise. You then descend to Mackinder's camp 4,200m. for breakfast and later proceed with the descent through the Teleki valley viewing the beautiful landscapes and high altitude vegetation around on the Naromoru route. Continue with the hike through the moorland to arrive at the Met-Station camp 3,050m. in the late afternoon for relaxed evening, dinner and overnight.

• Day 5 : Naromoru - Nairobi

  After breakfast, hike down through the forest to Naromoru gate 2,440m. where you will sign out of park and then drive out of the mountain to Naromoru town and then proceed to Nairobi arriving in the late afternoon.

• Warm sleeping bag, rucksack, day pack, hiking boots and a light trainers shoes, head torch, warm jacket, Balaclava (woolen hat), several pairs of warm socks, a pair of gloves, Rain jacket and a pair of waterproof trousers, fleeces or warm sweaters, reusable water bottle /Camelbak 2 liters, walking sticks, gaiters, light toiletry articles, and other personal items
