This Safari Package gives clients a chance to enjoy the fantastic wildlife and bushmen experience in Liwonde National Park and Lake Malawi’s beach with some unique water-based activities and bird watch.
About Liwonde National Park :
Liwonde National Park is Malawi's number one wildlife destination and has a wide variety of habitats dominated by broad plains on the side of the Shire River.
Hippos and crocodiles abound in these floodplain grasslands and large herds of Waterbuck, Kudu, Impala and Elephants are regularly seen in this open landscape. Other species that can regularly be spotted here are Reedbuck, Warthog, Yellow Baboon and Vervet Monkey. Also, there are many species of birds including Fish Eagle and Saddle-billed Stork.
In the Mopane-woodland antelopes such as Sable, Roan, Eland, Hartebeest, Duiker, Livingstone's, Suni and Oribi are found as well as unusually large groupings of Greater Kudu.
The hills of Liwonde National Park, the favourite haunt of Klipspringer, are covered with mixed woodland and together with other small pockets of dry deciduous thickets provide an ever-changing kaleidoscope of colour.
Tall grass tree savanna along the narrow floodplains of the east to west seasonal streams and the riverine thickets along these streams, are frequented by Buffalo which can, at times, be counted in the hundreds.
These riverine thickets are an unusually rich habitat and home to such rarely seen animals as Bush pig, Genet, African Civet, Wild Cat, Slender-, Bushy-tailed, White-tailed- and Banded Mongoose, Sun Squirrel and Clawless Otter.
Other species that can be found in the Park are Lion and Leopard, though rarely seen, a small number of Zebra and a variety of other species such as Bush baby, Serval, Spotted Hyena, Side striped Jackal, Porcupine, Pangolin, Honey Badger, Tree Squirrel, Hedgehog, Scrub Hare and Four-toed Elephant Shrew.
Birdlife is exceptionally varied in the Park and offers more than 400 different species.... including the rare Southern ground hornbill.
The Pel's Fishing Owl is often seen at dusk along the river's edge.
The African Skimmer and the Brown-breasted Barber are also frequently spotted. It is really heaven for the birdwatcher!
Day 2 – 5: Liwonde Safari Camp - National Park, Malawi
The rustic atmosphere of the camp is enhanced by its location in one of the richest habitats of the park. Just lazing about on one of the camp's various observation decks to watch the elephants or count the many species of birds, is the perfect way to spend a day here.
Walking safaris are available around the camp. Our fully equipped safari vehicles are always ready to take guests on game drives and our expertise and experience in the park guarantee the best possible safaris.
For an idyllic sunset trip, we can arrange a boat safari, to steam up the Shire River amongst the hippo's and crocodiles. Of course, we can also arrange morning boat safaris.
The local community is always more than happy to show our guests around and a village walk is the perfect way to appreciate Malawian hospitality.
About Lake Malawi:
The jewel in the crown of the country’s tourist attraction is Lake Malawi, “discovered” by the missionary explore Dr. David Livingstone just over 150 years ago. Although totally landlocked, Malawi is not denied its “inland sea”. This vast body of freshwater fringed by beaches of golden sand is only a scenic wonderland but it provides water sport opportunities for those looking for something beyond sun, sand and swimming. Its approximate dimensions are 365 miles north to south and 52 miles broad, hence the sobriquet: “the calendar lake”. The Lake, in the north, is quite extraordinarily deep: 2300 ft/700 m, plunging well below sea level. This reflects the enormity of the natural faulting of the Great Rift Valley, which is the origin of the lake. The width of the lake’s shorelands vary from nothing to over 25 kilometers (16 miles), the edge of the Rift valley rising steeply in places and more gently in others.
Because of its rich fish harvest, the Lake plays an important part in the economy. Fishing villages are scattered along the shore and the traditional industry and practices are an attraction to visitors. Access to the lake is possible along much of its length but it should be noted that it is usually necessary to take a short detour off the main roads in order to reach the beach. Despite the attraction the lake has to settlement, there are long stretches of totally uninhabited golden sand lakeshore, lapped by crystal clear waters. Kayaking, Sailing, Snorking, Scuba diving and water skiing are just some of the lake activities available to visitors. Journeys by lake range from the famous motor vessel the Ilala to sailing in an ocean-going yacht. Cruises into the upper reaches of the great Shire River are also possible.

The choice Absolute Zambia Safaris has been the result of a selection I made among dozens of local tour operators whom I asked for a quotation initially for a package covering the entire stay (about 12 days) in Zambia and then limiting to some transfers and 3 days in South Luangwa National Park Robert was the winner in this selection that covered three aspects: price, quality of service and kindness. It was the perfect choice. Robert in this trip in Zambia has never left me alone providing a service of the highest quality.
