The Machame Route, also called the "Whiskey Route," is a preferred choice for many climbers due to its scenic beauty and relatively high success rates. It offers varied landscapes, including lush rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and stunning glaciers near the summit. The route is challenging but manageable for most fit hikers, and it provides excellent acclimatization opportunities, increasing the chances of a successful summit.
Day 1 : Machame Gate (1,800 m/5,900 ft) to Machame Camp (3,000 m/9,840 ft)
The journey begins at the Machame Gate, where you'll register with the park authorities and start trekking through dense rainforest.
The trail gradually ascends, and after about 5-7 hours of hiking, you'll reach Machame Camp, your first overnight stop
Day 2 : Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,840 m/12,600 ft)
The trail continues through the rainforest, eventually giving way to moorlands.
You'll ascend to the Shira Plateau, offering stunning views of Mount Meru and the Shira Cathedral.
Hiking time is around 4–6 hours.
Day 3 : Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,950 m/12,960 ft)
Today's trek involves ascending to Lava Tower (4,630 m/15,190 ft) for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Valley.
Barranco Camp is nestled beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.
Hiking time is approximately 6-7 hours.
Day 4 : Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,995 m/13,106 ft)
The day starts with a challenging scramble up the Barranco Wall, offering exhilarating views.
The trail then traverses through alpine desert terrain to reach Karanga Camp.
Hiking time is around 4–5 hours.
Day 5 : Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673 m/15,331 ft)
You'll trek across barren landscapes, gradually ascending to Barafu Camp, the base for the summit push.
Rest and preparation are crucial for the summit attempt.
Hiking time is approximately 3–4 hours.
Day 6 : Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) and descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m/10,170ft)

The summit attempt begins in the early hours of the morning, usually around midnight.
You'll ascend steep scree slopes to Stella Point before reaching the iconic Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement, you'll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
Hiking time to the summit is about 7-8 hours, with another 5–6 hours to descend to Mweka Camp.
Day 7 : Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640 m/5,380 ft)
The final leg of the journey involves descending through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate.
After completing the necessary paperwork and receiving your summit certificates, you'll be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
Hiking time is approximately 3–4 hours.
