The Machame Route, often called the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most scenic and rewarding paths to Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit. This 8day trek. It offers a challenging yet gradual ascent, allowing better acclimatization and breathtaking views of the mountain’s diverse landscapes

Starting at Machame Gate, the route takes you through lush rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts before reaching the icy summit at Uhuru Peak. Key stops include Shira Plateau, Barranco Wall, and Barafu Camp, each offering unique terrain and stunning panoramas. The extra days improve acclimatization, increasing summit success rates. Descending via the Mweka Route, trekkers complete the adventure with a rewarding journey back through the mountain’s diverse ecosystems.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Nairobi - Moshi

  Pick up from the airport and transfer to Moshi Keys hotel for overnight.

• Day 2 : Moshi - Machame

  Pick up from your hotel at 9.30 am. and drive from Moshi to Machame park gate for registration and then you will start the hike for 6 hours along the forest trails to the Machame campsite for dinner and overnight in Tents at 2,950m

• Day 3 : Machame- Shira

  The trail gradually steepens through as you enters the giant heather moorland zone traversing the steep ridge and then hike.gently into the Shira plateau which has great views of Shira Cathedral which the third higher point in Kilimanjaro volcanic cones after Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. You will arrive at Shira 3,840m. campsite in time for Lunch and resting in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight will be at the campsite. (5-6 hours walk.)

• Day 4 : Shira - Barranco camp

  After breakfast, you will hike up the path above the highest vegetation zone hiking around the Western roop trail, walking through a rocky landscape to reach Lava tower 4,630m. for lunch. After lunch, you will hike down across the river and gently up before hiking gently to the Barranco valley viewing some of the highest altitude vegetation around to Barranco Camp 3,950m. there are good photo opportunities on this hike, especially if the walls are icy and the mountain is clear. Dinner and overnight in the campsite. (6-7 hrs. walk)

• Day 5 : Barranco camp- Barafu Camp

  After breakfast, we continue with the hike on a steep ridge on the Barranco wall, and then you climb to reach the top just below the fascinating views of the Heim’s glacier and the beautiful valleys down the mountain. Proceed with you trek as the trail gets gradual with gently ups and downs before you descend into the Karanga valley and then climb up to the Karanga campsite 4,035m arriving in time for lunch (4 hrs. walk). After lunch, you start an afternoon hike for 3 to 4 hours with a good views of the mass snowcapped top of Mt. Kilimanjaro if the weather permits towards the Barafu camp to join the Mweka route, which will be your descending route. The hike will lead up the ridge through a bolder rocks arrive at the Barafu Hut where you wil arrive in late afternoon. The last water on the route is in Karanga valley. From here you have close views of the snow of Kilimanjaro above Barafu campsite 4,700m. Prepare yourself and warm clothing for your summit climb and go to bed after an early dinner where you sleep for a few hours. (6-7 hrs walk)

• Day 6 : Barafu camp - Mweka camp

  This is your summiting day rising around 11:30 pm, and after some tea and biscuits, you start the 6 hours climb up through the scree to Stella point 4,720m. on the crater rim which a bit challenging part of the route for most climbers. At Stella point you stop for a short rest. From here, you join the other climbers from the Marangu route. You may encounter snow on your rest of the hike along the rim to Uhuru peak but this depends on the seasons. After reaching on the summit you can enjoy your accomplishment during and after the sunrise as you take some photos for your memory. You will then take a 3 hours descend from the summit and hike back to Barafu for a short rest and breakfast/lunch before descending down a rocky path into a moorland and into the forest to arrive at Mweka camp at 3,100m. in the evening for dinner and the last night in the mountain. (12+ hrs. walk)

• Day 7 : Mweka camp - Moshi

  After breakfast, the hike will take you about 3 hours through the forest to Mweka gate. After signing out you will receive the certificates for the successful climbers. From Mweka gate you will drive through Mweka village back to Moshi.

  Transfer to the airport or connect to the next destination. End of the trip.
