Start your day with a visit to Buddha Point and Simply Bhutan, a living museum showcasing traditional Bhutanese life. The view from BBS Tower is stunning and provides a perfect introduction to Thimphu. Explore religious sites like the National Memorial Chorten and the historic Chang Gangkha Monastery. Nature lovers shouldn’t miss the National Zoo with its unique national animal, the takin. Embark on a picturesque journey from Thimphu to Punakha, covering 77 kilometers in approximately 3 hours. Depart after breakfast, enjoying the scenic drive through Dochula Pass en route to Punakha, situated at an altitude of 1300m/4265ft. Punakha, blessed with fertile lands from the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, showcases its natural beauty and cultural richness. Morning exploration begins with Punakha Dzong, the ‘Palace of Great Happiness,’ built in the 17th century and now serving as the winter residence for Je Khenpo, the head abbot, and a community of 1,000 monks. Afternoon ventures include a visit to the historic Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of Bhutan’s oldest, and Chimi Lhakhang, the 15th-century Temple of Fertility. Evening descent immerses you in Punakha’s rich history and natural splendor. Overnight stay in Punakha.
Morning drive for local sightseeing. Visit Ta Dzong, once a fortified lookout tower that is now the National Museum. Then walk down the trail to visit the Rinpung Dzong, meaning “fortress of the heap of jewels”. Next, visit Kichu Lhakhang, the oldest temple in the country. From there, you will be taken to Drugyal Dzong (Bhutan Victory Fort), built in 1646 to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invaders during the 1600s. On a clear day, you can see Mount Jumolhari, Bhutan’s second-highest mountain at 7,314 meters. Evening is free for leisure. Overnight stay at Paro.
After breakfast, hike to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery, which is Bhutan’s most famous monastery situated at 3180 meters. Guru Rinpoche (the great spiritual master) is said to have flown on the back of a tigress to meditate in a cave where Taktsang Monastery now stands. The monastery is perched on the edge of a steep cliff, about 900 meters above Paro Valley. Overnight stay at Paro. Alternatively, after breakfast, drive to Chele-La-Pass (13,088 ft.) – the highest motorable road in Bhutan. Enjoy the scenic beauty and memorable landscapes from Chele-La-Pass. Return to Paro.
