Adelaide has gained an international reputation for the arts, food and wine, since the progressive years of the 1960s. This 6-day tour explores the city’s art, history and food. It includes a guided visit of the Art Gallery of South Australia by Christopher Menz, a former director of the gallery, and takes in a number of collections at historic houses, including The Cedars, home of the Heysen family, Carrick Hill and Fermoy House. Day trips to the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley, to enjoy the region’s acclaimed food and wine, round out the tour.

Day 1 : Arrive
The tour begins in our Adelaide hotel at 6pm. Meet your tour leader in the lobby of the hotel before proceeding to a local Adelaide restaurant for a welcome dinner. Overnight Adelaide
Day 2 : Art and History in Adelaide
A short walk from the hotel brings us to Ayers House, one of Adelaide’s finest historic mansions, now run by the National Trust. We enjoy a private tour through its three levels of Victorian era grandeur containing a significant collection of furniture, silver, paintings and costumes culminating in a delicious Devonshire tea. Departing Ayers House, we discover the area’s heritage on a guided history walk of Victorian-era Adelaide showcasing the gracious homes, terraces, churches and parklands finishing at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Christopher will guide us through the gallery’s comprehensive collection of Australian and Aboriginal works and show us through the significant exhibit of textiles and furnishings by William Morris. We reconvene this afternoon and visit the beautiful Mortlock Wing at the State Library of South Australia to admire its wrought iron balustrades, masonry columns and elegant glass-domed roof. Day 3 : Adelaide Hills and Hahndorf
This morning we travel by coach to Mount Lofty Summit and soak in the panoramic views across the city skyline to the coast. We continue to Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest German settlement dating back to 1838 in the Adelaide Hills. We visit ‘The Cedars’, and enjoy a guided tour of the home, garden and studio of renowned father and daughter artists Hans and Nora Heysen, with over 200 original works on display. After lunch in a winery overlooking the Adelaide Hills we return to the outskirts of Adelaide and visit Carrick Hill estate. The stately home and 40 hectares of gardens has survived with most of the original contents intact. The Art Gallery houses the private collection of the original owners and art patrons Sir Edward and Lady Ursula Hayward and includes contemporary European and Australian paintings and decorative arts. Day 4 : Barossa Valley
We depart Adelaide by coach to the Barossa Valley via the historic town of Gawler and stop at Langmeil Church, established by the Lutherans at Tanundah. We take a guided heritage tour of the Seppeltsfield Estate winery, the 1851 homestead, Elm walk, distillery and blending cellars and learn the family history and their influence on the Australian wine industry. After the tour we enjoy a leisurely lunch showcasing the best Barossa produce at the Fino restaurant on the Estate before returning to Adelaide in the afternoon. Overnight Adelaide
Day 5 : Art & Gardens
Today we visit Fermoy House and the adjacent museum to see the extraordinary private art collection of David Roche and enjoy morning tea. The collection, now bequeathed to the Roche Foundation and open to the public, contains over 3000 works of decorative and fine art, antiques, painting and sculpture amassed over a sixty-year period. We next move to the Adelaide Botanic Garden is home to a diverse range of plants from Australia and around the world. We take a guided walk through the different ecosystems including the conservatory and the palm house which contains plants from Madagascar. The afternoon is at leisure for further exploration in the gardens or oe revisit the South Australian Museum. This evening we head to a well-known Adelaide restaurant for our farewell dinner. Day 6 : Depart
The tour concludes after breakfast this morning.
