Badami – Set in Beautiful Countryside At the Foot of a Red Sandstone Ridge, the Small Rural Town of Badami Was Once the Capital of the Chalukya Empire, Which Covered Much of the Central Deccan Plateau Between 4th – 8th Centuries. the Earliest Chalukya Capital Was in Nearby Aihole, After Which the Capital Was Moved to Badami. the Sculptural Legacy Left By the Chalukyas Includes Some of the Earliest Examples of Dravidian Temples and Rock-cut Caves as Well as the Earliest Free-standing Temple in India. the Forms and Sculptural Work At These Sites Provide Inspiration for the Later Hindu Empires Which Rose and Fell in the Southern Part of the Peninsula Before Arrival of Muslims.
