Departing London journey to Stratford-upon-Avon to view Anne Hathaway’s thatched cottage and visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Visitors Centre before enjoying some free time explore this medieval town or stroll along the banks of the River Avon. Later we continue north to York where you'll view the ancient city walls, picturesque Shambles, and the magnificent York Minster during an orientation walk through the city. By evening, get to know your companions and Travel Director at a welcome reception, which includes a typical British pub meal and drink.
This morning we head for the historic University city of Durham, set around the picturesque River Wear, the city enjoys a long and varied history. View the magnificent 11th century Norman cathedral, the castle overlooking Palace Green, and a host of other fine period buildings. Continuing North there’s the opportunity to take pictures at Hadrian’s Wall before enjoying a scenic drive through Northumberland National Park and over the Scottish border. We’ll pause to admire the ruins of Jedburgh Abbey in the Scottish Lowlands before arriving in Edinburgh, Scotland’s bustling capital.
A bustle of medieval and Georgian architecture, Edinburgh is a fascinating city. This morning your Local Guide takes you on a sightseeing tour which includes the Royal Mile, views of Holyrood House, Arthur’s Seat, Princes Street and the Scottish Parliament. You can then choose between a visit to Edinburgh Castle or Edinburgh’s renowned Camera Obscura. In the afternoon enjoy free time to explore the city at your own pace or enjoy a spot of Scottish shopping along Princes Street. An optional excursion to Rosslyn Chapel, famous for its association with the Knight Templar and the Da Vinci Code, is also available. During the Edinburgh Festival, your visit includes tickets to the spectacular Edinburgh Tattoo on the castle grounds.
Today we pass North over the spectacular Forth Bridge to the ancient Kingdom of Fife and towards the famous golf course at St. Andrews where we'll stop to take photographs at the 18th hole! Onwards over the River Tay we arrive in the scenic Scottish Highlands where enjoy a local speciality at a whisky distillery to sample a ‘wee dram’. We then visit the charming village of Pitlochry in the heart of Scotland and on the edge of the beautiful Cairngorms National Park. Later, a scenic Highland drive takes us to our hotel where we enjoy an included evening meal.
This morning we return south through Scotland's picturesque West Highlands. Firstly, we view the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge before we enjoy views of Britain's highest mountain – Ben Nevis. We continue with a drive to Glencoe, the site of a bloody and cruel massacre in 1692 before travelling south through picturesque landscapes to the "bonny banks" of Scotland's prettiest loch, Loch Lomond. Later you arrive in the vibrant city of Glasgow where your orientation includes the monuments of George Square and St. Mungo's Cathedral. Later we continue South to our hotel.
Returning South, we make our way through the Scottish Lowlands to visit Gretna Green, where eloping English couples would cross the border to marry over an anvil. Over the border back in to England we stop for a special lunch in the Cumbrian countryside before passing through the beautiful landscapes of the English Lake District where the great poet William Wordsworth lived; we’ll pass through Grasmere where he wrote his most famous poem ‘The Daffodils’ before taking in views of Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England. By afternoon we continue South to the thriving city of Liverpool, renowned as the home of the Beatles.
This morning travel south passing through the scenic Malvern Hills and through the border Marches between England and Wales. We’ll pass briefly in to the ancient nation of Wales to visit an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Wye Valley; we’ll pause at the spectacular ruins of Tintern Abbey, one of Britain’s most impressive monastic ruins and also the inspiration for another of Wordsworth’s poems. Later, we cross back in to England to arrive in Bristol; here we enjoy an orientation to offer views of the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge and Brunel’s Victorian ship the SS Great Britain. This evening, join your tour director and fellow companions for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
Departing Bristol, we make the short journey to the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath. We’ll take in views of the elegant, honey-coloured, Georgian architecture and walk the cobbles in front of the medieval Abbey before enjoying an included visit to the ancient Roman Baths which date back to the 1st Century AD. Then onwards over the mysterious Salisbury Plain to visit the mysterious prehistoric monoliths at Stonehenge, an epic highlight of the trip. A final scenic drive through the Wiltshire countryside brings you back to London where your amazing holiday ends.
