Bara bhangal is one of the most remote villages of Himachal Pradesh. There is no road approach to this village and people of the village have to walk over high mountain pass for three to four days to reach the nearest road-head. People live here throughout the year with only few people migrating to the plains during the winter time. Bara Bhangal trek is very interesting as it involves an ascent to cross one pass, then a descent and a 2nd ascent to cross another pass and come across only one village and rest of the days we walk in the wilderness on high alpine pastures. The trail from Kullu Valley up to Kangra valley has a moderate level of difficulty and the trekkers are required to traverse across glaciers, dense cover of coniferous forests, meadows and rocky barren pieces of land. On each day of this trip, the trekkers are going to experience something different and something truly amazing. But for the trouble taken, it is a very fruitful trek for the people who are looking for isolated and in-tune-with-nature routes.
Day 1 : Manali to Lamadugh (8200ft)
We start our trek from Manali entering into the Valley of Manalsu River that flows west – east to meet the river Beas near Old Manali village. The area is a wild life sanctuary full of Cedar, pine, silver oak, wild cherry, chestnut and maple trees. Our first night halt is at Lamadugh—a beautiful campsite in a lush green meadow.
Day 2 : Lamadugh to Riyali. (10700ft)
This morning after having healthy breakfast, we will depart from Lama Dugh and proceed to our next destination Riyali Thach. Now the trail ascends through the ridge below Khand pari. There are unintrrupted views north towards the Sollang & Rohtang valleys. The ascents are long, gradual and exhilarating, with views opening across to the hampta valley & Deo Tibba. After 4-5 hrs we reach the verdant ridges. A long descent follows, reaching an intermediate valley and a prominent side of trail. From this point, a gradual traverse of 2-3 km leads from a small oak forest to the meadow known locally as Riyali. Overnight stay in tents.
Day 3 : Riyali to Kali Hani Base Camp. (11960ft)
Today we trek to the base of Kali Hani Pass. This is a lovely walk through the lush forest and then over the debris of glacier. At the end there is a short ascend to the campsite at Sangohar. The place affords a magnificent view of snowy peaks of Kullu and Lahaul Himalaya.
Day 4 : Base Camp to Dhanku Thach Via Kaliyahni Pass (15200ft)
The landscape slowly begins to change as forests and meadows give way to rocky back ground with patches of snow. It is a steep, long pull up to the top of Kali Hani pass, 4610m. Breath taking view surrounds the top of the pass. After absorbing some time on the ‘Pass’, we descend to the other side of the pass to fix your camp beside a mountain stream.
Day 5 : Dhanku Thach to Lamba Parao (12800ft)
This day we will trek through the trail that leads down into the shepherd’s valley and following the stream after crossing the bridge takes us to our camp. On the way you find a temple dedicated to Goddess where shepherd pay homage for the well-being of their flock.
Day 6 : Lamba Parao to Dadh Marhi (11500ft)
The trail goes along the river, first, through rocky terrain and then comes the meadow. After crossing the meadow we again enter the forest. At last you cross the river over a wooden bridge or a snow bridge to reach the campsite at Soon that lies on the other side of the river. Take pleasure of the magnificent surroundings and enjoy the exclusive overnight stay in the camp.
Day 7 : Dadh Marhi - Bara Bhangal (9455ft)
After wholesome breakfast, we will move ahead to visit Bara Bhangal, it will be again a trip of approx. 6 hours. The trail from here continues downwards to the River Ravi into the dense deodar forest, towards the one and only big village located in the valley, of Bara Bhangal. We will enjoy the overnight stay in the camp/tents set up in Bara Bhangal.
Day 8 : Bara Bhangal - Marhi (12560ft)
On this day, we will start the trail climbing in the direction of the next gigantic pass, Thamsar. The trail to reach the destination will take around 5 hours and winds up all the way through verdant deodar, pine, and birch forests with several mountain torrents to on the way break the monotony of the trail. The campsite is situated at Marhi which is close to the base of the Thamsar glacier. We will enjoy the overnight stay in the camp set up at Marhi.
Day 9 : Marhi to Panhartu Via Thamsar Pass (15170ft)
The trail gradually climbs up the valley, passing a prominent side valley and glacier to the east. After 3 to 4 kms, we climb steep boulder fields to reach a glacial lake. The trail further winds above steep slope and lead to another glacial lake and to the base of the Pass. After crossing the snowfield one leads to a prominent ridgeline – the crest of the Dhaula Dhar Range and the Thamsar Pass. The initial steep descent from the pass reaches a large glacial lake. There follows a steep descent to the meadow at Panhartu. Overnight camping.
Day 10 : Panihardu to Palachak ( 2770 M 6 Hrs )
The trail descends across a series of permanent snow bridges for 2km to 3km to reach a well-defined trail. The trail leads through a mixed forest of rhododendron, spruce and oak down to Palachak (2500m ). During summer, one can have tea and basic food available in the dhabas ( small hotel ) at Palachak.
Day 11 : Palachak to Billing (2400 M 7hrs)
At Palachak cross the metal Bridge and continue through the forest to reach the fields of corn, bean and potatoes near Rajgundha (2400m). From Rajgundha, the trail continues on the true right of the Uhi valley through Spruce, Oak and Rhododendron forest. After 4km to 5km, the trail heads around contours and Alpine ridges to Billing. From billing one can catch a car or jeep to Bir. It is 14 K.M by road. Bara Bhangal trek ends here.
