Stay in the desert and learn about the traditional Berber lifestyle during our Marrakech private tours weekend trips to Morocco
Day 1 : Staying with the Berbers
We’ll pick you up from the Marrakech airport and set off to visit the Berber village. Most of the people living in these Berber villages are descendants of the original settlers that created the villages hundreds of years ago and still continue their traditional way of doing things.
Their farmers’ markets sell a variety of fruit and vegetables and there are plenty of other handmade goods to pick up too.
There’s also a women’s argan oil cooperative, set up to promote genuine argan oil products in the market, as well as giving the locals a better chance at affording their children’s education. The Berber women will show you how they harvest this amazing oil, and you’ll even be able to purchase some for yourself!
Of course you will sample mint tea but most of all, what is really appreciated, is having lunch in a Berber house in a village overlooking the Atlas Mountains. These lunches are generally voted the best lunch of their entire stay by many of our clients, so tuck in!
If you’re looking to give your own gift back, we definitely encourage you to bring small gifts to give to the Berbers, including clothes and treats for the children. It’s a great way to introduce yourself well and make new friends!
We’ll drive through a number of villages but we’re quite happy to stop whenever you want for photos, views, or other points of interest. The countryside of Morocco is absolutely gorgeous and we want to give you the best opportunity to see it.
Around 5 p.m., we’ll arrive at the desert of Agafay (Terre des étoiles) where we’ll stay for the night. The Berbers will cook a traditional dinner which you can eat under the stars, and then you’ll be able to head into one of the comfy and cosy tents for a good night’s sleep.
Day 2 : Camels rides and cooking
After a traditional breakfast at the camp, you’ll be taught how to ride a camel for one hour, as well as being given a fantastic lesson on how to cook meals in the desert.
Later on in the afternoon, we’ll head back to Marrakech where you’ll spend time relaxing at a nearby hammam and get a massage. After that, you’re free to enjoy Marrakech at your own pace. Perhaps you would like to explore the nightlife at one of the many fabulous restaurants available, (we suggest Comptoir Darna or Palais Jad Mahal) or maybe you’d prefer to explore the many markets for a memento?
If you let us know in advance where would like to go we can make any reservations needed and will drive you to your restaurant and back to your riad at the end of the evening.
Day 3 : Time to head home
Depending on the time of your flight, you’ll be able to spend your Sunday exploring Marrakech’s many markets, chilling at a restaurant, or otherwise relaxing amidst the beautiful surroundings.
When you’re done, your driver will be ready to pick you up and drop you off at Marrakech airport two and half hours before your flight. This gives you plenty of time to check-in, pass through security, and browse through a number of shops to pick up those last minute items before your flight.
