Day 1 : Nairobi Tour
Upon arrival in Nairobi early in the morning we begin safari with visiting the Nairobi National Park then our exploration of the Great Rift Valley lakes. We shall have a brief stop over for lunch then proceed on to Lake Magadi. Highlights may include Von der Decken’s Hornbill As well as the multicolored Red-and-yellow Barbet. We could also catch the first glimpse of the flamingos among many wintering Palearctic shorebirds on Lake Magadi. Overnight will be at Lake Magadi Tented Camp.
Day 2 : Mt Kenya
Drive heading for the country’s highest summit, our journey to Mt. Kenya could yield Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Rueppell’s Robin-Chat, and Yellow-crowned Canary. The lodge’s waterhole is set up in a manner that attracts many mammals species that include the African Buffalo. We’ll spend the early mornings searching for White-starred Robin, African Emerald Cuckoo, Abyssinian Crimson-wing, African Crowned Eagle, Moustached Green Tinkerbird. A shaded riverside trail may reveal Mountain Wagtail, Crowned Hornbill, and up to eight other species of sunbirds, including the stunning Tacazze Sunbird. Dinner and overnight will be at Castle Forest Lodge. (FB)
Day 3 : Aberdares
We head for the Aberdares (where we overnight), visiting the Solio Plains en route. Here we will explore the alpine moorland above the tree line, perhaps encountering Jackson’s Francolins during our climb up into the uppermost accessible Lobelia-covered plains in Kenya. Our targets here include Alpine Chat and with some luck on our side, we’ll find the specialized and beautiful Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird. Dinner and overnight will be at Naro Moru River Lodge. Day 4 : Nakuru
We drive on to Nakuru where we will awaken to vast flocks of flamingos, pelicans, and other waterbirds. In the surrounding woodland are holds Narina Trogon, Red-throated Wryneck, Arrow-marked Babbler, and African Firefinch. After lunch we venture into Hell’s Gate NP, known for its colonies of Rueppell’s Griffons and clouds of Mottled and Nyanza Swifts. Our dinner and overnight will be at Lake Nakuru Lodge. (FB)
Day 5 : Bogoria
We will spend the early morning at Lake Nakuru, sifting through vast flocks of waterbirds. Later we drive to Lake Bogoria, rich in arid-zone birds, in search for Hunter’s Sunbird, Heuglin’s Courser, Lichtenstein’s Sandgrouse, and Southern White-faced Scops-Owl. At dusk hope to see Slender-tailed Nightjars gliding along the hippo-covered shore. We overnight at Soi Safari Lodge. (FB)
Day 6 : Baringo
Baringo to Kakamega. Today exemplifies birding in Kenya. We begin in the desert and end up in the most eastern territory of lowland equatorial Rainforest in Africa. First we visit the cliffs near Baringo, scanning for Hemprich’s Hornbill, Mocking Cliff-Chat, Fan-tailed Raven, and Bristle-crowned Starling. Later we explore the Kerio Valley, where we search scrubby hillsides for Green-backed Eremomela, Chestnut-crowned Sparrow-Weaver, Brown Parrot, White-crested Turaco, Black-headed Gonolek andPearl-spotted Owlet. Late in the day we arrive at Kakamega for a three-night stay with dinner and overnight at Rondo Retreat Centre. (FB)
Day 7 : Kakamega Forest
Kakamega Forest. Kakamega is full of birds and is justly famous as one of Kenya’s birding meccas. Numerous numbers of Kenya’s incredible forest birds are available only here. These include comical Great Blue Turacos, dapper Equatorial Akalats, and sensational Blue-headed Bee-eaters, Jameson’s and Yellow-bellied Wattle-eyes among other beauties like White-chinned and Banded Prinias, Bocage’s and Luehder’s Bushshrikes, Black-billed and Vieillot’s Weavers, Red-headed Malimbe, Gray-headed Negrofinch, and Red-headed Bluebill.
Day 8 : Nairobi
Today we return to Nairobi for a final night before your flight back home.
