Day 1 : Edinburgh City and Edinburgh Castle
Arriving in either Edinburgh or Glasgow airport collect your vehicle and make your way to the Scottish Capital city and spend the next three days exploring the city and its surrounds. From the winding alleys of the cobbled old town to wide avenues of the Georgian New Town, visit the Palace of Holyrood House and the Scottish Parliament or some of the national galleries and museums or climb to Arthur's Seat for the best views of the city's skyline. Finally visit Edinburgh Castle, the crowning glory of the Scottish Capital City and home to the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny and St Margaret's Chapel. Time-permitting, you can venture outside of the city you can discover Craigmillar Castle, the Royal Yacht Britannia or Rosslyn Chapel.
Day 2 : Loch Lomond, the Trossachs and Stirling Castle
Today you can enjoy a day-trip from your base in Edinburgh to explore the outlying countryside. Head north west to the passing Stirling and Callendar where you may choose to stop at the Glengoyne Distillery to see how Scotch Whisky is made before seeing the Bonny Banks of Loch Lomond and Scotland's stunning scenery known as the Highlands in miniature at the Trossachs National Park. Returning towards Edinburgh, make your way to Stirling to uncover a rich Scottish History viewing the towering Wallace Monument, the Bannockburn Battlefield or what was once Scotland's royal seat at Stirling Castle. Return to Edinburgh for your overnight stay.
Day 3 : Hadrian's Wall and the Lake District
Departing Scotland travel south through rolling hills of the Scottish Lowlands and across the border to England. First stop to Birdoswald Roman Fort visitor centre to uncover the secrets of Hadrian's Wall before returning west in to the awe-inspiring landscapes of Lake District home to towering peaks, rolling dales and tranquil waters. Take time to explore the lakes, their surrounding fells, woodlands, stone walls and quaint lake-land villages such as Windermere and Grasmere. This region is a haven for walkers, hikers, budding artists and photographers or those simply looking for a tranquil boat trips or lazy drives soaking up the scenery. Possible cultural visits include Wordsworth’s Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage along with Beatrix Potter’s Hilltop Farm.
Day 4 : The Beatles' Liverpool and Chester
Continue south to visit the magnificent city of Liverpool which was designated as European City of Culture in 2008. The city is home to two cathedrals, dozens of listed buildings, the famous Albert Docks and a wealth of Beatles Heritage including Matthews Street, the Cavern Club, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields and the Beatles Story Exhibition. Then on to the Roman city of Chester, home to Roman City walls and gate-towers, the stunning excavated Roman Amphitheatre, an impressive cathedral and the unique Tudor Facaded "Rows".
Day 5 : Shakespeare's Stratford Upon Avon and Warwick Castle
Passing in to the Midlands you may choose to stop at Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Gardens before visiting one of William the Conquerors fortresses at the stunning Warwick Castle. A short drive south you'll find Stratford-upon-Avon, a picturesque, medieval town of Tudor timberwork buildings, open greens and boats bobbing on the river Avon. The birthplace of William Shakespeare, Stratford is brimming with cultural and historic attractions including Shakespeare's Birthplace, Anne Hathaway's Cottage and Hall's Croft.
Day 6 : The Villages and Countryside of the Cotswolds
From your base in Stratford-upon-Avon, today venture out in the countryside to the South; here you can explore the quintessential landscapes of the Cotswolds including quaint and eccentric chocolate-box villages such as Broadway, Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold. Stunning historic sites you can visit include Snowshill Manor and Garden, Broughton Castle, the 13th century cistercian Hailes Abbey and the medieval manor at Sudely Castle, linked to King Henry VIII and 2 of his wives. The University town of Oxford and its medieval college buildings and Churchill's magnificent Blenheim Palace are also within driving distance.
Day 7 : The Welsh Capital and Cardiff Castle
Make your way South West from Stratford-upon-Avon and cross the border in to Wales. At Monmouth you may choose to follow the route of the scenic Wye Valley to the ancient monastic ruin at Tintern Abbey and the 13th century border fort at Chepstow Castle. Arriving in Cardiff discover this cosmopolitan Welsh city from the Edwardian baroque architecture of Cathays park, home to the national museum and gallery of Wales to the city’s stunning centrepiece at Cardiff Castle which combines Roman and Norman history with a gloriously lavish Victorian mansion. In the cosmopolitan Cardiff Bay you'll find the National Assembly for Wales, the Millennium Centre and a host of waterfront bars and cafes.
Day 8 : Bath City and Roman Baths
Today, cross the Severn channel and make the short journey East to the city of Bath which oozes Georgian opulence and is home to so many sites of historic importance that the entire city has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status. Visit architectural highlights including the Elizabethan Abbey and Pulteney Bridge or discover 18th century life at the beautifully preserved No1 Royal Crescent, as well as a wealth of quality museums, exhibitions and of course the spectacular Roman Baths and Pump Room. Time permitting you may choose to visit nearby village of Lacock, a picture perfect historic village and Lacock Abbey, used in TV and film productions of Pride and Prejudice and Harry Potter.
Day 9 : Stonehenge, Salisbury and Windsor
Returning East pass on to the Salisbury Plain to see the famous standing stones at Stonehenge or lesser known but equally enchanting Avebury Stone Circle. You may choose to stop in historic Salisbury to visit the magnificent cathedral which boasts England's tallest spire and houses an original copy of the Magna Carta. Alternatively, you may head to Windsor spend the balance of the day exploring this beautiful and historic town home to cobbled squares, timber fronted houses, and the world’s largest inhabited castle at Windsor Castle, the Queen’s favoured residence. By evening return your vehicle at Heathrow Airport and make your way in to the city using the extensive public transport network.
Day 10 : London City and Sights
Having returned your vehicle, today London is yours to explore on foot or by public transport. This magnificent city is a thriving metropolis with a vibrant modern culture and rich history and heritage. Explore world renowned sights including Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, St Pauls Cathedral, Trafalgar Square and the London Eye on the banks of the River Thames. Culture vultures will delight in some of the world’s most prestigious museums and galleries including the Tate Modern, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum whilst Oxford Street, Covent Garden and the West End make for unrivalled shopping opportunities.
