A major Gelukpa foundation dating from the 16th century, Thiksey is one of the most vibrant & active monasteries in the region. Of particular interest here is a two storey tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha seated on a lotus. Returning from Thiksey, you may like to walk up the palace hill to visit Shey Palace. Here you can view the gigantic copper- gilt statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni. The lamps burning in front of this image include an enormous one of silver encrusted with turquoises, which is said to hold enough butter to keep it alight for a year. Another gigantic statue of a seated Buddha, also of gilded copper, is housed in an adjoining temple rising through its two floors. Another popular site on this tour route is the Druk Padma School at Shey, famously called Rancho School as featured in the super hit Bollywood film Three Idiots. After your break, drive downstream of the Indus valley for visiting Sangam (confluence of Indus & Zanskar Rivers), en-route visiting Hall of Fame (museum of military heritage in Ladakh), Gurudwara Pathar Sahib and stopping at the Magnetic Point to observe its unique magnetic effect on the vehicles. Overnight at the hotel.

Nubra Valley lies to the north of Leh, between the Karakoram & Ladakh ranges of the Himalayas. The Shayok & Siachen Rivers drain the valley. Reach Deskit / Hunder in the afternoon and check-in at your camp / hotel.
