It is located in the Barun Mahalangur section of the Himalayas. It has a long ridge on each side like a mother’s arm protecting her child and the glacier at the southwest resembling a “Dablam”. In Nepali, “Ama” means mother and “Dablam” means sacred ornament worn by women of Sherpa community. Therefore, Ama Dablam means Mother’s Necklace. The name was given by its physical shape.
