Day 1 : Wells and the Dartmoor National Park
Departing London, we set off on our adventure to England's beautifully eclectic west country. We travel to the tiny market town of Wells, really no larger than a small town, Wells has city status owing to its elegant cathedral and Bishop's Palace. Explore Vicar's close (the oldest continuously inhabited medieval street in Europe) or the local shops and tea rooms before we continue to Dartmoor National Park. As the landscape changes we meander through beautiful country lanes, over ancient stone bridges and through dramatic rolling countryside where wild ponies roam. Tonight we stay in the heart of the arresting Dartmoor National Park where we will enjoy a welcome dinner together.
Day 2 : The North Cornish Coast, Port Isaac and Padstow Village
Continuing through the county of Devon in to the Cornish Peninsula, we make our way to the rugged cliffs and bays of the north coast of Cornwall. Here we visit the picturesque fishing village of Port Isaac; better known as Port Wen the town famously featured in the television series Doc Martin and you'll enjoy time to explore the familiar sights of the town. Then onwards along the coast to Padstow to enjoy a true highlight as lunch is served at 'The Seafood Restaurant', the flagship establishment of British television chef Rick Stein which serves a mouth-watering selection of locally sourced seafood and international dishes. Walk-off your food with a stroll around the scenic harbour town afterwards before we make our way to seaside town Falmouth, our base for the next two nights.
Day 3 : St Michael's Mount and St Ives
This morning we make our way to the is the fascinating and historical site at St Michael's Mount. We'll travel over the sea by boat to the island from the bustling little Cornish town of Marazion to discover the medieval castle and delve into the island's past. Later we head south to the furthest corners of Cornwall and to the delightful fishing town of St Ives where we can wander the cobbled streets between tiny fishermen's cottages to uncover the legend, history and tradition of this ancient town. Walk along the sweeping bay or discover art at one of only two Tate galleries outside of London. Later, we return to Falmouth for an evening at leisure.
Day 4 : The Tregothnan Estate and the Fowey Estuary
There's a treat for the green-fingered as we set off to explore Tregothnan, a beautiful historic house. Set amidst Cornwall's largest estate Tregothnan is the historic seat of the Boscawen family; a member of the gardening team gives us a private tour of the expansive grounds and the tea plantation, where we learn all about tea grown in England. We then wind our way through the Cornish countryside before arriving in the charming town of Fowey, our base for the next two nights.
Day 5 : Freetime in Fowey Village
Today is a free day with no group plans allowing you to relax and discover Fowey village at your leisure. Fowey is a typical Cornish fishing town, a centuries-old settlement nestling on the steep banks of the Fowey estuary. Visit the local museum, aquarium or St Catharine's Castle fort overlooking the harbour before wandering the cobbled streets or taking a boat trip out on the sea. By afternoon why not sit back in one of the coffee-shops and eateries overlooking the quaint harbour to watch the mussel boats sail back into the harbour, or seek out a friendly local pub for a local ale and sample the local delicacy – a Cornish pasty.
Day 6 : Polperro Village, Buckfast Abbey and Lyme Regis
Leaving Fowey, we make our way along the south Cornish coast, with a stop at Polperro fishing village before we leave the county behind us. Passing back in to Devon we visit the magnificent Buckfast Abbey a site which dates back to the 11th century and is home to Benedictine monks, the impressive abbey itself and beautiful gardens. Then onwards through the green hills of Dorset; to the county's principal town of Lyme Regis, home to Jane Austen's heroines from her classics such as the novel Persuasion. We may have a chance to gain views of the Jurassic Coast before hanging up our hats in Hawkchurch, near Lyme Regis, for a farewell dinner together.
Day 7 : Wiltshire and Salisbury
The final leg of our journey takes us over the county border we follow the old Roman road in to ancient Wiltshire. We'll pass over the grassy plains and rolling downs of before arriving in the eerie landscapes of the Salisbury Plain home to ancient prehistoric sites and features. We'll head for Salisbury itself, home to one of England's finest cathedral cities; the cathedral boasts England's tallest spire, Europe's oldest working clock and is also home to an original copy of the Magna Carta. After exploring the cobbled streets of this ancient market town we return East to the metropolis of London, a world away from the sedate Cornish coasts. Tour ends around 5.30pm.
