Day 1 : Arrive at Paro
Pickup from airport (2200m altitude) after completing the airport formalities and drive to hotel at Paro. Check into the hotel and after lunch; visit Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower, which now houses the National Museum. Below the museum is the Paro Rimpung Dzong (meaning “Heap of Jewels”, built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. A short walk takes you to the base of the Dzong at the sight of cantilever bridge over Paro River. Overnight stay at Paro.
Day 2 : Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery
Distance 5KM, 5-6 Hours, 900m Ascent
After breakfast at 7:30am, driver will drop guest(s) at the base of Taktsang monastery. From here hike upwards to the monastery which climbs through a beautiful pine forest. The hike leads to the imposing Taktsang monastery, built in 1600s. It is believed that in the 8th century, Guru Rimpoche, the tantric mystic who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, landed here on the back of a flying tigress to subdue a demon. Guru Rimpoche is supposed to have meditated here for three months in a cave where monastery stands at present. Upon return to the base, drive towards Thimphu. Overnight stay in Timphu.
Day 3 : Gynekha - Gur
Distance 7 km, 5 hours, campsite altitude 3,290 m.
From Thimphu drive for 45km towards the starting point of the trek. Today’s trail is all through terraced fields and conifers vegetation. The trek starts at beautiful Gynekha village and begins with a short descend to the river. After crossing the river start climbing up to a huge rock platform from where beautiful picturesque view of the valley below can be seen. The campsite is located two hours ahead at Gur.
Day 4 : Gur - Labatama
Distance 12 km, 5 hours, campsite altitude 4,300 m.
On the second day, the trail leads through the high ridges from where guest(s) can truly appreciate the rugged beauty of the surroundings and the mountain vegetation. The path winds through refreshing meadows adorned with wild flowers and asparagus (in spring). The first mountain pass of the trek gives a spectacular view of Kanjenjunga (Sikkim) and a number of the Bhutanese Himalayan peaks. After the pass enjoy descend and will be able to see the entirety of the Dagala mountain range including meadows and yak herder camps. After descended into the Labatama valley begin to climb gradually through the valley, passing several yak herder huts before Uthso lake. The campsite is right next to the lake.
Day 5 : Labatama
This day will be dedicated to relaxing and recuperating at Labatama. It is an ideal to take an excursion to any of three nearby lakes: Reli Tsho, Hen Tsho and Jama Tsho. Hikers are encouraged to take the opportunity to engage in some trout fishing as the location is ideal. Permit is required for fishing so guest(s) should request Legpai Druk Yul Tours & Treks to make the necessary arrangements beforehand.
Day 6 : Labatama - Panka
Distance 8 km, 6-7 hours, campsite altitude 4,000 m.
The trail climbs along the western side of Dala Tsho up to a saddle at 4,520m. From here onwards a fantastic view of the majestic Himalayan peaks can be seen. The mountain peaks visible include Mt. Everest (Nepal), Mt. Kanchenjunga (Sikkim), Mt. Jomolhari, Mt. Jichu Drake, Mt. Tshering Gang, Mt. Khangbum, Mt. Masang Gang, Mt. Tsende Gang and Mt. Gangche Ta. If guest(s) want an even better view, climb a peak, which is close to the saddle with an altitude of 4,720m. From the saddle the path descends, passing some yak herder huts to Doccha Chhu. Follow the river for a while, but stay higher up on the slope to reach Panka, campsite for tonight.
Day 7 : Panka - Talakha
Distance 8 km, 5-6 hours, campsite altitude 3,080 m.
Start early at 7:30am to cross several passes but none of them require a major climb. On the way different varieties of blue poppy (June-July) and mountain birds can be find. After crossing the last pass, Tale La (4,180m), start a long descend to Talakha Gompa (monastery). Campsite is right beside the monastery. From here enjoy a great view of Bhutan’s capital Thimphu.
Day 8 : Talakha - Thimphu via Chamgang
Distance 6 km, 3 hours, 440 m descent
From the monastery it’s a short walk down to the feeder road which will lead you to the village of Chamgang. Upon reaching at Chamgang, enjoy the picnic lunch. After lunch drive towards Thimphu. Take well deserved rest for remaining hours of the day. Overnight stay at Thimphu.
Day 9 : Thimphu Valley tour
After breakfast at 8:00am visit the King’s Memorial Chorten (built in memory of the third King of Bhutan who reigned from 1952-1972), nunnery temple and traditional paper factory. After lunch visit the giant Buddha statue (largest Buddha Shakymuni in the world) on a hill overlooking Thimphu. Later visit the majestic Tashichhodzong. In the evening stroll through Thimphu city and absorb the lifestyle of the people. Overnight stay in Thimphu.
Day 10 : Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass
After breakfast, enjoy the scenic drive to Punakha with a stop at Dochu La (3,100 meters), where on a clear day, get spectacular views of the Himalayas. From the pass, drive downhill through the forests of rhododendron, fir and hemlock. On the way, stop at Metshina Village and hike through paddy fields up to Chimi Lhakhang Temple. This temple is dedicated to the great Yogi in the 14th century known as Drukpa Kuenley, or the “Divine Madman,” who is believed to bless women who seek fertility. After lunch at Lobesa, visit nunnery institute on the top of the hill. In the evening, have leisure time at Khurathang town. Overnight stay at Punakha.
Day 11 : Return to Paro
After breakfast at 8:30, visit the Punakha Dzong, which is stunningly situated in between the male and female rivers like an anchored ship. Then drive back to Paro via Dochula Pass (3150m altitude). At Dochula, visit the new Druk Wangyal Monastery, which is the only of its kind in the country with elaborate paintings depicting the lineage of the present monarchy and their visionary works. Enjoy continue descends till Semthokha and stop in Thimphu for lunch. After lunch, continue drive towards Paro. Check into the hotel for Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 12 : Departure
In the morning, drive to airport for onward destination.
