15 Nights / 16 Days
Covering in all, the best of India; Delhi, Jaipur, the Taj Mahal, the mystifying Temples of Khajuraho, ancient holy Varanasi, the remote hill station of Kalimpong and certainly Darjeeling, the tea central.
Welcome to India! You will be received at Indira Gandhi International airport, New Delhi by one of our manager and soon after move to your hotel for overnight haul.
After having a relaxing breakfast, move out for a daylong sightseeing tour of Delhi, taking in the remarkable Red Fort, Jama Masjid - India's oldest and largest mosque, Raj Ghat - the site of Gandhi's cremation and other places of attractions. In the evening return back to hotel. Elective sound and light show trip to Red fort. Overnight stay at the hotel.
Following the breakfast drive to Jaipur, lovingly known as the Pink City as Maharaja Ram Singh had painted all of the Old City with the welcoming pink in 1876 to indicate a visit by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), it is also the bustling capital of the state of Rajasthan. The state of Rajasthan came into existence after Partition from a mixture of 22 feudal kingdoms, known in the British period as Rajputana, 'Land of Kings'. On arrival check in at hotel. Evening is free to shop in the lively bazaars of Pinkcity. Jaipur is magnificent for shopping.
Early in the morning travel to the 16th century Amber Fort - a sprawling Rajput structural design which embraces the hill on which it was built and views the hot plains below. Ride on an elephant that carries you to the lofty fort, where you take pleasure in this tour of Rajput history. Afterward enjoy a tour of the City Palace and Jantar Mantar - an old yet cleverly designed space observatory. Enjoy the remaining day in your way. Overnight stay at your hotel.
Travel to Agra visiting by way of Fatehpur Sikri, former royal capital of the great Mughal ruler Akbar. Built between 1569 and 1585, it has been desolate for more than four centuries, by all description discarded in 1600 due to a scanty supply of water. A masterwork in red sandstone, the huge ruins remind you of a highly structured film set. Afterward travel to Agra and check-in at hotel. Subsequent to some moments of leisure drive to visit the renowned Taj Mahal. TAj Mahal was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in loving memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz, who unfortunately died during childbirth in 1631. The Taj Mahal in Agra is described as the most exaggerated monument ever built for love and remains one of India's most endured symbols. Created exclusively of white marble and inlaid with semi-precious stones, the Taj Mahal has no comparison. Later, visit the impressive Agra Fort. Return back to hotel by evening for overnight stay.
In the morning board in express train to Jhansi and on arrival travel onward to Orchha. Placed on the shores of the River Betwa, Orchha is in mid of a fantastic compound of well-preserved 16th century temples and palaces. Overnight stay at hotel.
Travel further to Khajuraho - home of the splendid Hindu temples which were built at some point in the Chandela period over a 100 year burst of innovative brains from 950-1050 AD. Commemorate in stone, the carved temples exhibit very creative characteristic of Indian life. Distinguished above all for their fragile sensuality and up-front eroticism, how and why they were built still remains an ambiguity. In fact, the Chandelas seem to have forgone concerning the temples soon after they were finished and it took 'rediscovery' by the British before these overwhelming masterwork were fully cherished in India. Though we won't be able to chase away the ambiguity, we have ample time to see the temples for ourselves! The implausible skill of the artisans is apparent throughout. Adding to the attractiveness, these beyond belief temples deviously change vast as the day passes away, passing from a warm pink at sunrise to white under the midday sun and back to pink at sunset. Overnight stay at your hotel.
Fly to Varanasi in the afternoon. Conceivably the most sacred city in India; Varanasi, also known as Benares or the city of Shiva, is also one of the oldest cities on earth. Sitting on the banks of the holy River Ganges, it has been a centre of wisdom and evolution for more than 2000 years and is a land of Hindu pilgrimage. On reaching check in at hotel. Evening is free to walk through the slender lanes of this holy city.
This morning, we take pleasure in a sunrise boat ride on the holy Ganges where we will view the ancient religious tradition of rite purification that takes place on the many riverbank ghats (banks). Later, we get on a tour of the city and an indirect path to Sarnath - where Lord Buddha conveyed his first oration. At sunset consider re-visiting the ghats for the evening pilgrimage, remarkably different from the dawn ritual. Overnight stay at your hotel.
Today's morning time is for relaxation. You have an alternative to further travel around in this vivacious city. By afternoon checkout and move to Railway station to board your train to New Jalpaiguri. Overnight on board.
On arrival in the morning, you will be received and moved directly to Kalimpong. Kalimpong, a far-flung hill station, once part of Sikkim and one-time meeting point on the trade route to Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal, sits in the middle of beautiful mountainous panorama where orchids and other flowers grow in abundance. Great views can be had of Kanchenjunga and the town owns numerous significant monasteries, counting the brilliantly painted Zong Dog Palri Phodrang Gompa (simply known as Durpin Monastery) and Thirpai Choling Gompa founded in 1892 and recently repaired. You will have the day to roam around the town in any way you like. Overnight halt at your hotel.
Parting Kalimpong, we travel to Gangtok, where the rest of the day is free. Capital of Sikkim, a tiny Himalayan state known for its orchids and flowers and for the heavy persuasion of Tibetan culture, Gangtok even though quickly budding is still full of allure, owing to its Buddhist past. Beyond the busy market areas, lays the monastic compounds and prominent geography.
Go out to see eye-catching Rumtek Monastery, Sikkim's largest and most active monastery, which is located in a lower valley. Also during the day tour Gangtok taking in the Royal Monastery - Tsuklakhang, the Institute of Tibetology and the Orchid Sanctuary. Built in 1958, the Research Institute of Tibetology is world famous for its research activities on the language and culture of Tibet; possessing a faculty of eminent scholars, a library with a large collection of documents and rare books on Buddhism and an attached museum with a rare collection of antiques, coins and Tibetan paintings. Overnight halt at your hotel.
Leaving Gangtok, we drive to Darjeeling. Sitting at a spectacular altitude of 2124m with a backdrop of mighty snow-clad Himalayan peaks and surrounded by verdant tea plantations, Darjeeling has been a popular hill station since the British established it as an R & R centre for their troops in the mid 19th century. Draw cards include a number of Buddhist monasteries, tea plantations and colourful markets.
Enjoy a drive to Tiger Hill to catch sunrise over the snowy peaks of Kanchenjunga - the world's third highest mountain. Continuing, enjoy a visit to the Ghoom Gompa (monastery) followed by city sightseeing and a visit to a tea estate. Overnight at your hotel.
Move to Bagdogra airport to board your flight to Kolkata or Delhi. On arrival catch your connecting flight for onward destination.
